Description

The article, “Me Talk Pretty One Day” written by David Sedaris, is a testament that even when learning gets tough it is always worth it in the end. He talks about how he is still waiting to not be petrified by fear like he was as a child but now he is even more afraid. He is rightly afraid too. His teacher is ruthless and does not miss any opportunity to belittle David. The moment that David is finally able to understand French, even if it is the sound of his teacher saying, "You exhaust me with your foolishness and reward my efforts with nothing but pain…" he is still ecstatic that his hard work has paid off. The author is extremely focused on learning to speak French, the title says it all. In the article David Sedaris says, “I've spent some time in Normandy, and I took a monthlong French class last summer in New York.” He also says in the second paragraph that he moved to Paris just to learn French. My third key point is that even though learning this language was difficult David found it worth every moment that his teacher lashed out at him. David Sedaris says “the world opened up” to him and he sees this as the turning point in his journey to learning French. At first it appears that David’s intended target is students. It is actually much more specific than that though. David is writing to non-traditional students who have or might return to school. Not only does David just say, “AT THE AGE OF FORTY-ONE, I am returning to school” he states his age in all caps making his statement clear. This is to capture the attention of his readers showing that it is never too late to go back to school. The author connects with his audience by talking about things that people his age can relate to such as, when David first shows up to the school while in the lobby, he sees other students and comments how they are all attractive and dressed nicely. He then makes a reference to Pa Kettle from the movie Ma and Pa Kettle which was created in 1949. David does show a lot of confidence and reminds himself that being a little older is not a bad thing. David tells himself

“I am now a full-grown man. No one will ever again card me for a drink or demand that I weave a floor mat out of newspapers”. As a non-traditional student, David feels he is taken more seriously. David Sedaris makes a strong point when he says, “My only comfort was the knowledge that I was not alone”. No matter how scared he got he realized that he wasn’t alone. His fellow students were there to help. It is clear that the author believes a lot of people need encouragement to go back to school and better themselves. He acknowledges that some classes can be competitive by saying, “Unlike other classes I have taken, here there was no sense of competition”. The comradery David feels from his classmates help him survive this challenge. Learning is not nearly as frightening when you have peers helping you along the way....
