Description

The cosmological function of myth serves as a type of early science, explaining natural phenomena. One such myth is that of the global flood; it has been in existence for millennia and exists in every culture. People long believed that a global flood was a reality and used science to prove it. Creation myths have an intersection with science as well, but modern theories on the creation of the world and universe are still debated and contested. In a journal entry, reflect on the following: What do you think about the theories of the flood? Is one theory more plausible than another? Could there be more than one explanation? Does the theme that you chose for your final project have theories based in science to explain it? Support your answer with relevant sources.

3-2 Journal: The Intersection of Science and Myth p.182 I think the flood theories are all hard to believe, and some could maybe be more plausible than the others and I also think there could easily be more than one explanation to these theories. Each of the theories have scientific accounts of the flood as an after fact, but the way they are described of happening are not very scientific. Out of the three from the text, I like the Metamorphoses account of the flood, where the humans displease the gods and the gods decide to destroy all the mortals. Jupiter and Neptune create the storm causing it to flood and destroy not only the humans, but the animals as well. I like how it goes into detail of the houses and farmlands being underwater, and I got the image of these places actually being flooded. The other versions of the flood are pretty similar; the bible tells it as man is constantly sinning so God has Noah build the ark, but it was his doing that created the flood and caused damage to the earth. Scientifically, no being can create the weather, but the land of where the flood takes place is considered in the scientific manor. As far as repopulating and reversing the flood, it all defies science and natural causes. I think similar themes of good and evil and the actions of others can be applied to my final project on the tricksters, but I am not sure if science is the explanation to these themes.
