Integral calculus including definite and indefinite integrals, techniques of integration, with applications in mathematics and physics. Prerequisite: Mathematics 3A with a minimum grade of C. Recommended Preparation: Students with Advanced Placement Credit should contact the department. Enrollment Comments: Students who have completed Math 34B will only receive 2 units for Math 3B. Not open for credit to students who have completed Math 2B or 3BS or have passed the AP Calculus BC exam. Course Goals. • • • • •

Obtain a conceptual understanding of integration and its relationship to differentiation. Carry out routine calculations in integral calculus. Obtain fluency in applying techniques of integration to the evaluation of integrals. Apply integral calculus to problems in mathematics and physics. Numerically approximate definite integrals.

Course Supplies. • Text: James Stewart, Calculus, 8th edition, Early Transcendentals. ISBN 978-1-305-27036-7. • Pens: blue or black ink only. • A calculator of any type for your personal use. Calculators will not be allowed on exams. All of these items can be purchased at the campus bookstore. You can locate reserve copies at the library by entering the title of the text into the search bar at https://www.library.ucsb.edu/. Communication. I will communicate with you via email and update the course website frequently. Therefore, it is critical that you check the course website and your U-mail at least daily. Revisions. I reserve the right to alter anything on this syllabus. I will send an announcement when I update the syllabus posted on the course website. Make sure the version date on your syllabus matches the latest version date. Homework. • Homework will be assigned each week. Each assignment will consist of required Webwork problems and suggested textbook problems to be done on paper. • The suggested problems will not be collected, but should be regarded as part of the assignment and should be completed. Exam questions will require an understanding of both Webwork and suggested problems. • At the end of the quarter, the scores for each assignment will be combined according to their size: an assignment worth 20 points has twice as much weight as one worth 10 points. • Late homework will not be accepted. • I will drop the lowest 3 homework scores. Further missing homework scores will only be excused in the case of a documented emergency. 1

Examinations. • There will be 3 midterms and a final. • The midterms will approximately cover chapters 5,6,7, respectively. The final will cover all of the course content, including chapter 8. • For each exam, please bring your school id. If the id is smudged or scratched up, also bring a government issued id. • Calculators are not allowed on exams. • You may bring one 3 × 5 index card with you to each exam. You may either handwrite notes or glue typed notes to both sides of the index card. • Exams will be returned in discussion, or can be collected during my office hours. If you leave the room with an exam, or you alter it, I will not regrade it. • If you miss a midterm and have a documented emergency, I will adjust your grade accordingly or give a makeup midterm, at my discretion. • If you wish to take the final before it is scheduled, contact me three weeks prior to the final at the latest. There will be a 10% penalty for such an exam. • You will only be able to take the final after it is scheduled in the case of a documented extreme emergency. Grading. Your grade will be computed as follows: Midterm 1 14% Midterm 2 12% Midterm 3 14% Final 40% Homework 10% Attendance 10% Waitlist and Enrollment. If you are not enrolled in the course and you wish to enroll, sign up for the waitlist on GOLD. To maximize the likelihood of enrollment, you should attend all lectures and all meetings of a discussion section you wish to enroll in. You will need to sign the course crashers list each time you attend lecture or discussion. More details can be found at http://www.math.ucsb.edu/undergrad/ courses/registration Discussion Policies. • If you wish to switch discussion sections, you must obtain the consent of the TA’s for both sections. Do not drop and attempt to re-register on GOLD, or you may not be able to re-register in any of the sections. • The attendance component of the grade measures how often you attend discussion. Attendance at discussion will be recorded on an attendance sheet passed out at the beginning of the class. • You may have 3 unexcused absences from discussion, i.e. I will drop the lowest 3 grades in the attendance category. Further absences will only be excused in the case of a documented emergency. Academic Honesty. From “Academic Integrity at UCSB – A Student’s Guide”: Students are expected to refrain from cheating and plagiarism, refuse to aid or abet any form of academic dishonesty, and notify professors of any knowledge one has about cheating, plagiarism, or collusion. More details can be found at http://judicialaffairs.sa.ucsb.edu/AcademicIntegrity.aspx • You may work on assignments in groups, but you should complete your assignments individually, writing answers in your own words. • Cheating or other forms of academic dishonesty can result in failing the assignment, quiz, or exam; failing the course; or referral to Judicial Affairs, at my discretion. Don’t be that person. Resources.
