4-1 Short Answer: Intent for the Statue of Liberty

I have never researched the intent of the Statue of Liberty prior to this assignment, therefore, my entire interpretation of it has changed. I was under the impression that the meaning of it had something to do with freedom however outside of that I was completely unaware of the details. I now understand there was a joint effort between France and the United States to successfully complete the project, originally intended to represent the lasting friendship between the two nations. French and American designers worked separately but together to create the statue which later went on to represent several things. At one time the statues torch served as a navigational aid for sailors. Then became the property of the US War Department due to its location on an army post. It wasn’t until 1924 that the statue became the Statue of Liberty National Monument as we know it as today. I found it interesting to know that at one time the statue served as inspiration to immigrants who sailed passed it on their way to America to achieve freedom.

The artifact I chose for project 1 is the Pride flag. The question I pose is, did the creation of the Pride flag allow LGBTQ members more freedom to be openly gay without feeling as if they needed to be ashamed of who they were? The approach I will take to find answers to this question is interview LGBTQ members that were alive in 1978 and ask them if they felt comfortable being open about their sexuality after the

flag was created and released. And then compare their answer to how comfortable they were prior to the flag’s creation....
