1. Having read the articles presented in this module, reflect on how their discussion of intent and the changes to it affect your interpretation or understanding of the Statue of Liberty. Based on the articles presented in module 4, the intent of the artifact's creator might be interpreted differently by the potential users of the said article. As reported by MCNamara (2019), Fredric Auguste Bartholdi viewed his creation of the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of liberty that spread outward from America. However, the statue ended up being interpreted as evoking the idea of immigration. The intention and interpretation seem to be directly opposite. Also, changes made to an artifact change its understanding. As seen in the addition of Emma Lazarus` famous poem to the Statue of Liberty, changes in the original artifact would change its meaning. From the articles, I understand the history and the cultural basis leading to the development of the Statue of Liberty. The story surrounding the development of this statue gives me an understanding of the creator's intent and an interpretation of the Statue of Liberty based on the creator's cultural background. I grew up believing the Statue of Liberty represented freedom for the immigrants and America being a free land to accommodate the immigrants. However, after going through the articles, despite the elements of immigration as a result of incorporating the Emma Lazarus` poem, I can instead interpret the Statue of Liberty as an admiral of the liberty in America that was intended to spread out to the rest of the world.

2. Think about the artifact that you are studying for Project 1. Pose one question about the intent of the creator of the artifact. In one to two paragraphs, explain one approach that you may take to find the answer to that question. Project 1 Artifact: The Death of Socrates Question: Why did the executioner use poison instead of any other means of execution? To approach this question, it is mandatory to understand France's culture during the neoclassical period, the period being depicted by the painting. Following the philosophy and history behind the Death of Socrates, as narrated by Pilato, the scene in the painting aims to teach a new culture. The believers in the education of Socrates are taught not to fear death and believe in the immortality of the soul. This approach would help understand the use of poison in the culture and understand the intention of the creator.
