2-2 Short Answer: Ethical Concerns

Sara Landry

Review the three sample proposals below and provide brief feedback to summarize any ethical concerns you have related to each of the proposals, based on what you know about ethical codes and expectations in the social sciences.

1. Proposal 1: Racial Predisposition – The aim of this study is to examine the direct link between race and violent criminal activity. In this study, I plan to prove the direct and positive correlation between race and incidence of committing violent crimes. This will then prove that race is the strongest indicator of tendency toward violent crimes. While I find this to be a fascinating subject and would like to see the statistics that comes with ethnicity and crimes, I do not find that this project is ethical. Due to the pure fact that we would be looking at a race as a whole instead of individuals and their intents, this would not do much good for the population. Whether the criminal is Caucasian, Hispanic, African or Asian, it this will do more harm than good for the people involved within the study. Placing a label on a race just because there were a few people who committed tendency to act towards violent crimes seems unethical and could hurt others within that race who are not violent. My suggestion would be to do research into why people feel tendency towards violent crimes and possibly find a common ground as to what causes these to happen.

2. Proposal 2: Electroshock Therapy – In this study, I will examine the effect of electroshock therapy on undesirable behavior in human subjects. This study will administer electrical shocks to human subjects as a disciplinary measure when undesirable behavior is observed. The goal of the study is to determine whether the electroshock therapy is a suitable treatment for resolving disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents. If this therapy is found to be effective, it will be prescribed to resolve disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents. With this proposal, I would have to say suggesting electroshock therapy, especially on a minor would not be considered a wise decision. Even if the subject displays undesirable behavior, this would be cruel treatment towards a living creature. This study could intern do more harm than good in the end. It could cause a person to have a psychological break and live in fear as they grow older. It could also cause a chain where other facilities to act upon this treatment to correct others who they deem is undesirable such as the mental society, prisons, and so on. I find that this would not be an effective means of treatment and instead one that could do more damage to society, especially the youth involved.

3. Proposal 3: Health Problems, Diet, and Socioeconomic Status – This study aims to examine the relationship between health problems (diabetes, heart disease, and obesity), diet, and socioeconomic status. It is proposed that people of lower socioeconomic status are more likely to encounter these problems. Research will be conducted on human subjects where data are collected on diet (the types of food consumed along with money spent on food), and this will be

related to the overall health of individuals in the study. The results and findings of this research will be published publicly so others can see the risks of consuming cheap, low-quality food. In relations to this study, I do find that it is very important to help relay the message of eating healthy and keeping up a healthy lifestyle while doing so. However, basing a study on just one class in society will not give the people an underlining comprehension on relationships between these key factors. By singling out one class of people, we cannot see the whole picture. If they study is to happen, it would be best to include individuals from all working class to understand what habits are made when dealing with health. An example could be that a person in a lower class may not have a good income to buy organic, but they may take other means to try and stay healthy while a person of wealth might not care since they have income that will help through medical spences. The point is that it does not matter if a person has money or not, ether one could contract heart disease or diabetes. This test should be for all classes and not just one....
