Description

Surname 1 Student’s name Professor’s name Course Date The Patronage System During the patronage system in the Baroque period, the wealthy members of the society as well as the church members provided financial support to the musicians. These support groups had therefore, much influence on the type of music that the composer could play. Most of the activities the musicians performed depended entirely on the approval of the financial support groups. The benefit of the patronage system in the music industry is that musicians were assured that their music would be readily available for the purchase hence guaranteed high sales. The musicians were also certain that they could easily get popularity through their music. Politically, the patronage system strengthened the various political parties and brought about discipline among the politicians. During this time, there were rare case of political fragmentation hence benefiting the government and interest groups from all sectors. The primary challenge about the system is that the composers of the music were limited to the type of music they composed. They were supposed to come up with music that their financials assistants could fund. This implied that the composers were limited to the content in their music. The musician could not fully explore their talent in the music industry. Besides, for any musician to fully receive support from the patron, it all depends if the patron liked the music.

Surname 2 The system was unproductive and could not bring about improvement or development not only to the musician but to the society at large. According to Bearfield (2009), the politicians and the prominent people in the society were using the system as a means to come up with negative policies that could enable them to remain powerful in the society.
