Description

Revised research questions: 1. What were the biggest issues that were resolved at the Constitutional Convention? 2. Did the drafting of the U.S. Constitution create an American Government that is too powerful, or not powerful enough with the limits we have? Thesis Statement: The U.S. Constitution is an example of what a balanced, yet imperfect, document can be to create a one free nation with democracy. The drafting of the U.S. Constitution was home to several conflicts and disagreements, but eventually led to a document that is unified for the United States. Checklist for Conducting further research: 

Review my primary and secondary sources and their references page for other related sources to my topic.

Evaluate information from new sources, credibility, applicability, etc.

Ensure I have all appropriate citations within my document.

Use strong sources to connect an argument that supports my thesis statement.

Identified Relevant Sources and Process Used: 

The two primary sources I will be using is “From George Washington to John Jay, 18 May 1786”, and “From George Washington to James Madison, 31 March 1787”. These letters uncover the fact that there were several concerns in the beginning of the constitutional convention. With these sources, I will explore my first question of “What were the biggest issues that were resolved at the Constitutional Convention?”. With the little knowledge I had regarding this topic to begin with, this question seems to be the one

that will uncover quite a bit of information regarding the conflicts and disagreements, and how they were resolved. 

The secondary source I will be using is “Michael I. Meyerson, Liberty’s Blueprint”. This source offers firsthand account essays from both James Madison and Alexander Hamilton regarding the large debate of ratification of the U.S. Constitution. This source will allow me to explore my second question “Did the drafting of the U.S. Constitution create an American Government that is too powerful, or not powerful enough with the limits we have?”. Madison feeling as though the country needed a strong government, but that states should hold more power than the government, and the opposite for Hamilton as he believed the states should have little to no power, leaving the government to make all of the powerful decisions. I feel as though this source will help me develop my project as it gives me two different point of views to see the topic.

I found these sources through the course content, by going to Shapiro Library, clicking “Research Guides”, and then located “HIS 100 – Perspectives in History”, which took me to the research guidance page for this class. On this page, there was options for each topic, and both primary and secondary sources linked to assist us in our research.
