On the article, “Me Talk Pretty One Day”, the main claim is that even while it may be hard and somebody else might make it difficult for you, learning a new language can always be possible if you put your heart and soul into it, because the author, David Cedaris, connects to the audience by expressing his personal feelings, using humor to capture the audience’s attention, and describing events and comments made by the teacher that made it difficult to stay focused and interfere with learning the new language. Throughout the article, we can see that the teacher is very unsupportive, abusive, and hypocritical with the author stating that “…the teacher would occasionally use us to practice any of her five fluent languages.” , After explaining how she will not let anyone speak anything other than French during class. The author eventually finished the article by saying “…The world opened up, and it was with great joy that I responded…” which shows us that the author started understanding the language but just could not fluently speak it yet. “THE FIRST DAY OF class was nerve-racking…” Which, foremost, expresses the level of stress that the author was under during this period of the transition. If you have transitioned to a new country, with a new language, you can sense the level of stress and tension that the author was dealing with. Dealing with such a stubborn teacher was not going to be easy, but the author knew that it had to be done if he wanted to be fluent in French. Speaking with other students in the hallway didn’t help in learning the language well; it was a way of supporting each other by the author’s statement of “Much work, and someday you talk pretty. People stop hate you soon.”. The teacher went as far as to tell the author in perfect English “I hate you”, which exemplifies the hate she has towards him and the rest of the students.

The author states how he had spent up to four hours every night on his homework and “… working even longer whenever we were assigned an essay.” So, the teacher would not classify him as lazy. Even with the hard work and long hours; the teacher would express herself through words and actions. The author continues to express the actions of the teacher with humor in order to obtain the reader’s attention. In the classroom, there was no sense of competition or race since everyone would be getting treated like nothing by the teacher. The teacher went as far as to hurt one of the students with a pencil to the eye. Even with long hours of work, extreme effort, and coming together as a team, the author and the other students had a hard time dealing with the abusive and hypocritical teacher. The first sentence of the article doesn’t exaggerate anything that the students had to go through to finally be able to understand everything being said by the teacher. The critical thinking helped me to take a deeper look into the author’s perspective and what he meant when he wrote the article. This led to creating an exemplar analysis of the piece and envision the student’s pain through the article. I will be using large-scale revision in most, if not all, of my academic and professional life as it helps me in structuring and developing better-written paragraphs with stronger details and supporting evidence.
