Name_Kevin Wutzer_______________Date_9/4/19__Section____________ RED TIDE PART I. GENERAL INFORMATION REGARDING FLORIDA RED TIDE. 1. You will be answering questions from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission 2. Click on the Red Tide FAQ link and answer the following questions. a. What is red tide? Higher-than-normal concentration of a microscopic alga b. What is the scientific name of the organism that causes Florida red tide? Karenia brevis c. Is the water always red during Florida red tide? No, they can appear red, brown, green, or even purple d. How long can Florida red tides persist? They can last a few weeks up to a year e. What determines the length of time a Florida red tide bloom lasts? Physical and biological conditions that influence its growth and persistence, including sunlight, nutrients and salinity, as well as the speed and direction of wind and water currents. f. What causes Florida red tides to be transported? How far can they be transported? can be transported around the Gulf of Mexico as coastal waters move with winds and currents. As far north as Delaware. h. Why isn't Florida red tide found in freshwater systems? because Karenia brevis cannot tolerate low salinity waters for very long g. How are red tide movements forecasted? How are red tides monitored? Using wind and water current data once a bloom is located. By collecting water samples routinely and in response to blooms i.

What makes the Florida red tide organism harmful?

Many red tides produce toxic chemicals that can affect both marine organisms and humans. The red tide organism in Florida, Karenia brevis, produces brevetoxins that can affect the central nervous system of fish and other vertebrates, causing these animals to die.

j. Does coastal pollution cause Florida red tide? There is no direct link between pollution and the frequency or imitation of red tide k. Why is it difficult to control Florida's red tides? Potential controls must not only kill the red tide organism but also eliminate the toxins from the water l. What are the symptoms of respiratory irritation caused by Florida red tide? Who is most likely to be affected? (coughing, sneezing, tearing, and an itchy throat) those by the shore. m. When should you avoid swimming during a Florida red tide? People with respiratory illness may also experience respiratory irritation n. Is it okay to eat commercially harvested shellfish during a Florida red tide? Why or why not? Yes the shellfish are monitored by the government for safrty o. Is it okay to eat recreationally harvested shellfish during a Florida red tide? Why or why not? Recreational harvesting of bivalve molluscs such as hard clams, oysters and mussels from conditionally approved or approved shellfish harvesting areas is banned during red tide closures; these organisms may not legally be harvested and, therefore, should not be eaten during any closure of a shellfish harvesting area.

p. Is it okay to eat local finfish during a red tide? Why or why not? yes, because as long as the fish are filleted before eaten. All the toxins are in the gut of the fish. q. What animals should not be eaten during a red tide bloom? a dead or distressed animal r. Does cooking or freezing affect whether or not seafood can be eaten during a red tide bloom? No, cooking or freezing does not destroy the red tide toxin s. How should you care for your pets during a Florida red tide bloom? If you love on the beach keep your animals inside as they could get a respiratory infection. If you are the beach don’t let your animal play with dead fish or foam. PART II. PART III. RED TIDE CURRENT STATUS. 1. Click on the Red Tide Current Status link and answer the following questions. a. What is the current status for Manatee County and Sarasota County? What is the date given on this map? Background to low concentrations in and offshore of Sarasota county ( 08/22/2019 – 08/29/2019) b. What are the possible effects of very low, low, medium, and high Karenia brevis abundances? What should you do during instances of medium and high abundances? Very low- possible respiratory irritation; shellfish harvesting closures when abundance equals or exceeds 5,000 cells Low- respiratory irritation; shellfish harvesting closures; probable fish kills; probable detection of surface chlorophyll Medium- respiratory irritation; shellfish harvesting closures; probable fish kills; detection of surface chlorophyll High- all above, plus water discoloration
