Description

5th ScS: Emmeline Jean Hanson I found it interesting that Emmeline Jean Hanson’s study of muscle was influences by the early discovery of an unusual type of muscle fiber in nine species of Serpulimorpha. I assume these are some kind of serpents. I also found it interesting that she discovered the Z-lines, A-band, Iband, and C-band, and we still use these terms today in science. I learned that in the earliest phase of contraction, the I-bands rapidly disappeared (really just became dark grey and couldn’t be distinguished). My question is, why did they become a uniform dark grey when contracted? Why didn’t they stay the same and/or just shorten? I also learned and found it interesting that she proposed the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction. She did a number of experiments to describe this theory and it is actually mind-blowing how she became of this because this theory happens every single day of our lives, voluntarily and involuntarily. Another question I have is why did she become so interested in muscles? What prompted her to study muscles in depth rather than another topic of biology? These resources about Emmeline Jean Hanson tell me that anyone can do science. They also tell me that it is never too late to find what you want to do because she became interested after she went to college, so a type of person who can do science can be and older person or a younger person and all the ages in between. She was an interesting person to read and learn about and it shows that anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, can do science....
