6-3 Assignment Identifying Your Thesis Statement Eng 122 By: Shanell Norfleet 10/02/2020 A Mother Tongue by Amy Tan

In the article there are many claims and key points because not only does she talk about her mother broken English she talked about stereotypes and how she faced me but what stood out to me in the beginning was that she stated “Don't judge a book by its cover... or someone intelligent by her English”(Amy20) but she was ashamed of her mother's broken English but then she goes on to share her experince as a second generation Asian-American and how she overcame the restrain And stereotyping associate with bilingualism.

Amy believed there was stereotyping in the education system against Asian American students. She stated that the Asian Americans get a higher score and math than English and believe the teacher pushes it in that way. In the Article II paragraph Amy goes on to talk about her shame some more and how she would pertend to be her mother at times so no one could hear her broken English Amy thought that her mother's English limited her.In paragraph 21 Amy stated that her mother limited English Limited her perception of her she believed that her mother English reflected the quality of what she had to say. Then Amy goes on to say her stereotyping Journey didnt end there; she stated that her old boss told her that her writing was one of the worst he had ever seen and she should hone her talent for account management.

Amy stated that her mother likes to read Forbes reports and listen to Wall Street week and Shirley MacLain booksWith ease bad boyfriends they only understand 50% of what she was saying to them and her broken English and when she would speak Chinese they couldn't understand her. The key fact is judging people solely on their impression. Another key fact is that she stated they seem just as bad as if everything is limited including people's perception of the limited English speaker.

One of the messages Amy wanting her readers to know is don't judge someone based on language or how they speak to capture that is Amy Hughes personal stories of her of her mother to better understand dthis “ my mother was standing in the background Whispering loudly why he don't send me a chat already 2 weeks late so mad he lied to me losing me money.” but I had to talk to her boss for her and ask her in perfect English where was her money is two weeks late but what stood out the most was when Amy wrote a book and what she called her mother's English she knew she made a difference with her mother looked at her and told her it was easy to read
