Marijuana Legalization Thesis: Even though it is argued that marijuana contains economic value and medicinal benefits, marijuana should not be legalized recreationally in the United States as it encourages harmful habits, increases dependence and, risk of mental illnesses. Counterargument I: In recent years, marijuana has had a growing reputation as a natural medicinal agent that can aid in relieving a range of physical and psychological illnesses and symptoms. Refutation I: Although marijuana possesses medicinal advantages and properties, it still should not be legalized recreationally because it creates the opportunity to increase the availability and distribution of marijuana. Increased availability leads to increased usage which in turn can lead to higher instances of marijuana abuse and dependency amongst users.
Counterargument II: It is argued that marijuana usage does not cause any adverse health effects on the user and there have even been studies done to show that smoking marijuana alone (without the concurrent use of tobacco) does not increase the risk of lung diseases.
Refutation II: Despite that, different methods of marijuana consumption can still lead to health risks and complications. Smoking anything, be it tobacco or marijuana, as long as it is a plant matter, produces cancer causing compounds and can seriously damage lung tissue. Frequent marijuana use can also impair cognitive abilities and compromise short term memory....
