7-1 Discussion - Moral Development One’s theory of mind might relate to their moral stance on societal issues dependent on their level of moral development and schema’s that inform that development, both past and current. Those hopes, values, agendas, and intentions all impact our capacity for tolerance, sensitivity, and empathy for the beliefs and values of others. Also in how we stand on a given societal issue. 2020 was certainly ripe with opportunity to examine and re-examine our positions on such issues as the Pandemic, Black Lives Matter, racism, and the elections. A think a strong argument can be made that a great deal of the polarity and division in our society today is a result of some rather weak theories of mind. I can use my understanding of theory of mind and moral development to bridge the opportunity gap by first carefully reflecting on and considering my attitude, values, and behaviors and move from thinking and talking to doing. This is not always easy or comfortable to do. Social media and news are replete with viewpoints and opinions on the big issues associated with bridging the opportunity gap. In my privileged existence mightn’t a better moral position be to get out and do something about it. You can riot and protest, or you can volunteer at a homeless shelter, food & clothing bank, or with any number of community outreach programs and affect a true change.

I could engage a friend to volunteer with me for a societal cause such as the eradication of poverty, applying your understanding of theory of mind and moral development first by actively listening to their opinions and values related to a societal cause and simply suggest they volunteer in order help produce a tangible, positive outcome. I am damn sure not going to accomplish by brow beating them. If I can be empathetic and engage in real back and forth dialogue with a

friend on a given issue, I can fold said suggestion(s) into that conversation. Theory of mind applies to the programmatic theme of social justice as responses to societal issues are based in knowledge, beliefs, intentions, and emotions. Theory of mind applies to our capacity to have meaningful conversation, consider the points of view of others with respect and sincerity, and resolve conflicts with dignity....
