8-4 Reflection Essay

Reflecting on my persuasive essay on Workplace Diversity I have learned that there is plenty of research available to support my argument that diversity is important and beneficial to employers and employees. Employers benefit from having a larger pool of qualified candidates for jobs and employees benefit by feeling a sense of belonging and afforded the opportunity of having more jobs to chose from. One major source that I used in my essay was an article I found on News Day on Starbucks policy on employees with tattoos. The article was very informative because it not only explained the policy change but discussed interviews with the company and its employees. The challenges that I came across while writing my essay was there did not seem to be enough evidence that justifies not having diversity in the workplace that go beyond how the company thinks their customers/clientele would perceive them if there was diversity in their business. Stew Leonard’s grocery store is a perfect example, their employees are required to cover their tattoos simply because the company feels that it does not align with their farm fresh moto. I would like to believe that this companies clients concern would be more about the groceries being farm fresh and not about the employee’s tattoo. Reflection questions: A. What peer-review feedback did I choose to incorporate concerning my argument and why? The peer-review feedback I chose to incorporate was adding numbers from the US Bureau of Labor, adding this information strengthened my argument by giving the reader data that backed my argument.

B. What challenges did I face in developing my argument? What could I have done differently? The challenge that I faced in developing my argument was deciding which type of diversity to incorporate. What I could have done differently would be to research the statistics that show how/what exactly has changed for companies since having a diverse workplace. C. What peer-review feedback did I choose to incorporate concerning your exploration of the issue and why? The feedback that I chose to incorporate concerning my exploration of the issue and why was to research further from the News Day source. The News Days is the strongest source that I used for my essay, and upon further research I was able to gather information needed to present evidence to support my argument. D. What peer-review feedback did I choose to incorporate concerning my effective source integration and why? The peer-review feedback regarding my resource News Day article was helpful, I chose to incorporate the interview and statements from Starbucks and Stew Leonard’s Grocery Store by doing this I was able to show both sides of the argument. E. What writing strategies were most effective in supporting my argument, given my audience, subject and purpose? I think using a descriptive writing strategy was the most effective in supporting my argument. My subject was diversity in the workplace, with the purpose of proving that diversity is beneficial to everyone. My target audience is essentially employers and employees, however I felt that the information and examples provided in my essay, anyone could be persuaded to agree that diversity in the workplace is not only beneficial but essential.
