Description

CHAPTER 5 REVIEW QUESTIONS 1) Define the term population: All the organisms of the same group or species who live in a particular geographical area and are capable of interbreeding.

2) List four factors that can influence population growth: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Birth rate Death rate Immagration Emmagration

3) Draw a graph (or find an image on the internet) that shows exponential growth in a population. Remember to label each axis. Please take a photo of this graph and insert it here:

4) Draw a graph (or find an image on the internet) that shows logistic growth in a population. Remember to label each axis. Include in your graph the carrying capacity and label it. Please take a photo of this graph and insert it here:

5) Explain what conditions can lead to exponential growth in a population? Exponential growth may occur in environments where there are few individuals and plentiful resources, but when the number of individuals becomes large enough, resources will be depleted, slowing the growth rate. Eventually, the growth rate will plateau or level off.

6) Explain why populations inevitably grow logistically rather than staying at a growth rate that is exponential? When resources are unlimited, populations exhibit exponential growth, resulting in a J-shaped curve. When resources are limited, populations exhibit logistic growth. 7) Define what a limiting factor is and give two examples? Definition: Anything that constrains a population's size and slows or stops it from growing. Example #1: Mates Example #2: Competition with other organisms for resources 8) What is the difference between immigration and emigration? The difference is that immigrant is the country moved to, and emigrant is the country moved from. 9) Define the term carrying capacity. Carrying capacity can be defined as a species' average population size in a particular habitat. 10) List four limiting factors that control population growth (keep growth down)? 1. Food 2. Water 3. Habitat 4. Mate 11) Estimate the world’s current human population. 7 Billion 12) Describe the growth of the human species in detail. Be specific with timing. The world population increased from 1 billion in 1800 to 7.7 billion today. The world population growth rate declined from 2.2% per year 50 years ago to 1.05% per year....
