Question 7 Needs Grading Your organization recently purchased a large, metal shearing machine. You have been asked to identify the hazards of operating this equipment and make recommendations of ways to control the hazards. Determine at least one control strategy from each level of the hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, personal protective equipment). Select the control or combination of controls that you feel would be most effective. Explain the reasoning for your choices.

3 Your response must be at least 300 words in length. Selected Answer:

My organization recently purchased a large, metal shearing machine. It is imperative that any hazards associated with the shearing machine operation be identified and assessed and for recommendations on ways to control the hazards to be identified also. One big hazard for workers operating a metal shearing machine is being exposed to loud noise. Noise induced hearing loss is possible for workers exposed to noise 85 decibels or higher which could cause hearing loss without protection. The most effective control for this noise hazard would be for workers to wear noise canceling earmuffs which is a PPE control. Another hazard of working on a shearing machine is having untrained workers which could lead to injury from improper equipment operation. It is necessary that workers learn the proper procedures in operating the shearing machine such as how to use controls and to make adjustments whenever necessary. A control strategy for this hazard would be administrative in conducting proper certification and training of working on the shearing machine. There are amputation hazards from operating shearing machines as well. There is danger and hazard from metal or moving parts of workers getting injured if their hands get caught in them. Various machine motions such as rotating, transversing, cutting, punching and bending can all be harmful if not protected. An engineeering control that can be put in place to prevent hazards are guards that act as physical barriers to worker contract with these moving parts. Another hazard on a shearing machine could be having a defective parts like a leaking hydralic hose that can cause damage or puncture wounds to the hand. A control that can be used would a substitution control of swapping out faulty parts that casue the leaking oil.Anot herhaz ar dwoul dbeent r apmentf r om c ont actwi t hbendi ngbl adesandmet al swhi c hcancaus edeepcut son handsandfi nger soramput at i oni ns omec ases .Anel i mi nat i oncont r ol woul dbet opl aceadi s t anc et abl et odec r eas ec hancesofc omi ngi n c ont actwi t ht hebl ades .
