Charles I Was Guilty of Treason Charles was tried and convicted by the people. Treason was not seen as a specific set of ideas, as it was up to a monarch judiciary to decide if it was treasonous. High Treason is the crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government. Petition of Rights 1628 This outlined the rights and liberties of subjects, based largely on the Carta and previous legislation. People saw this as their rights, inherit through the monarchy. It outlawed forced loans or taxation without Parliament’s approval, b troops, marital law in peacetime, and arrest without reason. Charles would sign this, but then after he dissolved parliament went against it. Charges Against Charles I Charles I came into England with his power, believing in the Divine R Kings. He began to be tyrannical, and overthrew the rights and liberti people. This was the leading charge against the King. England not stand for the king ruling without Parliament. He was charged with Tyranny He sought to collect taxes and forced loans without the conse Parliament. This included the Ship Tax inland. He also collected tonn and poundage. He had eleven years of personal rule under the Eleven Years o Tyranny He refused to call parliament for eleven years He also sought to institute religious reform in direct opp to the public. He refused to pass the Nineteen Propositions These asked that the extraordinary guards around Char removed and discharged He was charged as a Traitor He married Henrietta Maria She was a French, Roman Catholic Princess, and was n supported by Parliament or the people, as it went again country and its ideals.
