Professor Taylor English 2030 8 November 2016 1. How early in the story does O’Connor foreshadow what will happen in the end? What further hints does she give us along the way? How does the scene at Red Sammy’s Barbeque advance the story toward its conclusion? Through the emphasization of The Misfit throughout the story, O’Conner foreshadows what will happen in the end in the first paragraph, continuing almost relentlessly as she talks about going to Tennessee instead of Florida, keeping it a central topic as they drive through Georgia. The Misfit and his crew decide to show up nonchalantly to the car accident, seen as the climax of the story, in a black hearse-like car. The scene at Red Sammy’s Barbeque advances the story to its conclusion when Red Sammy’s wife suggests that The Misfit could show up in their town. 2. When we first meet the grandmother, what kind of person is she? What do her various remarks reveal about her? Does she remain a static character, or does she chance in any way as the story goes on? When we first meet the grandmother, we are shown that she is an outspoken person, unafraid to offer her gained wisdom throughout her extended life, especially when it works out in her favor. It might be seen as selfish, but she does not seem to think so. Her various remarks reveal that she follows religion highly and believes it makes her superior to others, and believes that being a lady is above all else for her. She does not remain a static character which is shown when she encounters The Misfit, trying to reason with him and make him find some good in himself to spare her and her family while being completely fearful of him. 3. When the grandmother’s head clears for an instant (Paragraph 138), what does she suddenly understand? Reread this passage carefully and prepare to discuss what it means. When the grandmother’s head clears for an instant she suddenly realises that The Misfit is her own son, but it is too late and he shoots her three times in the chest from fear of being touched. 4. What do we learn from the conversation between The Misfit and the grandmother while the others go out to the woods? How would you describe The Misfit’s outlook on the world? Compare it with the author’, from whatever you know about Flannery O'Connor and from the story itself. We learn from the conversation between The Misfit and the grandmother that he has suffered a great deal while spending his time in the penitentiary and believes he was punished unfairly and is undeserving of all the pain he received. As a result, he feels that the world and the people in it are not good, and believes that of all the people he knows, there are no good people left. This is the exact belief of the author as well. 5. How would you respond to a reader who complained, “The title of this story is just an obvious platitude”? It is easy to agree with the reader, as the title is somewhat foreshadowing to how the tale

will end with The Misfit not sparing the family....
