Link: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-I5QZwr4I0) “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” -Scarecrow THE IMPORTANCE OF HONESTY Honesty is a virtue and affects all aspects of life. Even in the business world, one good thing to be reminded of is the famous line spoken by the Wizard of Oz in the 1939 classic film, right before the secret of his humanness was unveiled: Honest brands do not hide anything . What is It You found out that a person that is close to you, was lying all along? How would you react then? Are you going to confront him/her? What do you think the best thing to do? In this part of the module it will help you in making good decisions. Come and discover how to resolve ethical issues. An ethical issue is an identifiable problem, situation, or opportunity that requires a person to choose from among several actions that may be evaluated as right or wrong, ethical or unethical. The ethical issues in entrepreneurship are so many to mention all. We will be limiting our study to basic fairness, personnel and customer relations distribution dilemmas, fraud, unfair competition, unfair communication, nonrespect of agreements, and environmental degradation because these are the most commonly encountered. Some policies and practices may have been acceptable now but will become unacceptable later. We consider policies and practices as inappropriate when they are deliberate wrongdoings such as: ● ●

Discrimination designed to harm others, Withholding the rights of other people,

Humiliation of other people designed to diminish psychological needs and dignity, Destructiveness, and Acts of violence.

Many business issues may seem straightforward and easy to detect and resolve, but in reality, a person often needs several years of experience in business to understand what is acceptable or ethical. Many ethical issues in business can be categorized in the context of their relation to conflicts of interest, fairness and honesty, communications, and business associations. In order for a business to have its own set of rules and guidelines in establishing order and discipline within the organization, the following core principles must be used as guide: Fairness and honesty - expresses the just and reasonable treatment of the stakeholders, free from discrimination and according to the rules and principles of the company. personnel and customer relations distribution dilemmas - refers to the behaviour of business persons toward customers and suppliers that involves keeping company secrets, meeting obligations and responsibilities, and avoiding undue pressure that may force others to act unethically. fraud, unfair competition-One aspect of fairness relates to competition for example companies sometimes gain control over markets by using questionable practices that harm competition unfair communication- involves false and misleading advertising, as well as deceptive personal-selling tactics, anger consumers and can lead to the failure of a business. non-respect of agreements - this includes breach of contracts and failure to comply with what has been agreed upon. 7

environmental degradation- both business and the public, acknowledge the damage done by businesses to the environment in the past. That is why consumers are increasingly demanding that businesses take a greater responsibility for their actions and their impact on the environment like pollution. How can we advocate honest policies and practices in all aspects of business operations?
