360-Degree Evaluation A performance evaluation done by different people who interact with the employee, generally on forms compiled into a single profile for use in the evaluation meeting conducted by the employee’s manager Balanced Scorecard A measurement framework that helps managers translate strategic goals into operational objectives Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale A behavioral approach to performance rating that consists of a series of vertical scales, one for each important dimension of job performance Consideration Careful thought, typically over a period of time Constructive Dismissal When an employer commits a fundamental breach of the contract, such as by unilaterally changing a key term of the contract, the employee can treat the breach as a termination Discipline The practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience Forced Distribution Method A performance ranking system whereby raters are required to place a certain percentage of employees into various performance categories Insubordination Defiance of authority, refusal to obey orders Just-Cause Dismissal Misconduct of an employee, or some other event relevant to the employee, which justifies the immediate termination of the employment contract Management by Objectives A philosophy of management that rates performance on the basis of employee achievement of goals set by mutual agreement of employee and manager Non-Culpable Dismissal Termination of the employment contract that is not just Performance Appraisal (Evaluation) A process in which a manager evaluates an employee’s performance relative to the requirements of his or her job and uses the information to show the person where and how improvements can be made
