NAME:_______________________GRADE & SECTION: _____________ ENGLISH TEACHER : ______________ WRITING DEFINITIONS (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/common_writing_assignments/definitions.html) A formal definition is based upon a concise, logical pattern that includes as much information as it can within a minimum amount of space. The primary reason to include definitions in your writing is to avoid misunderstanding with your audience. A formal definition consists of three parts: 1. The term (word or phrase) to be defined 2. The class of object or concept to which the term belongs 3. The differentiating characteristics that distinguish it from all others of its class WHEN TO USE DEFINITIONS  When your writing contains a term that may be key to audience understanding and that term could likely be unfamiliar to them  When a commonly used word or phrase has layers of subjectivity or evaluation in the way you choose to define it.  When the etymology (origin and history) of a common word might prove interesting or will help expand upon a point. ADDING SHORT DEFINITIONS (https://www.prismnet.com/~hcexres/textbook/def.html) In writing, you must define other terms as well. Typically, short definitions—a sentence, clause, or phrase in length—will suffice. SENTENCE A sentence is a set of words that contain: 1. ) a subject (what the sentence is about, the topic of the sentence), and a predicate (what is said about the subject); and expresses a complete thought. Examples : Predicate always SUBJECT PREDICATE contain a verb ( a Ram and Tara speak English when they word that denotes are working. an action ).

A clause is comprised of a group of words which includes a subject and a finite verb. A clause contains only one subject and one verb. The subject of a clause can be mentioned or hidden, but the verb must be apparent and distinguishable. A clause “a group of words containing a subject and predicate and functioning as a member of a complex or compound sentence.” – Merriam-Webster Examples: o I graduated last year. (One clause sentence) o When I came here, I saw him. (Two clause sentence) o When I came here, I saw him, and he greeted me. (Three clause sentence) PHRASE ( https://www.learngrammar.net/english-grammar/phrase) A phrase, therefore, is a group of words which has no finite verb in it and acts to complete the sentence for making it meaningful. THE FOUR STUDENTS ( Source : https://www.momjunction.com/articles/moral-stories-for-kids_00369197/)

There were four friends who hated studying. They partied all night before their exams and planned to skip the test by lying to the professor. So they went to the dean and told him that they had been to a wedding the previous night and on their 2

way back, they had a flat tire. They continued to say that they had to push the car all the way back, as they didn’t have a spare tire and hence, were not in a position to write the exam. The dean listened and agreed to let them take the test on a later date. Happy that they got a second chance, the four friends studied hard and were ready for the exam. On exam day, the dean asked the students to sit in separate classrooms, which the students agreed to. The examination paper had only two questions, for a total of 100 marks.
