MODULE 2 EVALUATION Direction. Read the instruction carefully. Write your answer on a whole sheet of paper. 1. In not more than ten sentences, analyze the origin and the development of “fake news” in the Code of Kalantiaw. How did the researchers discover that they are hoaxes? Considering the primary and secondary sources. (10 points) The code of Kalantiaw was supposed to be a legal code in the epic history Maragtas that is said to have been written by Datu Kalantiaw. This tells us the different ways of punishment for criminals that has been done on the 1400. Examples were thrusting the hand of the perpetrator in a boiling water; beaten to death with sharp thorns; killed by ants ;and etc. Historian Josue Soncuya wrote about the code of Kalantiaw in his book “Historia Prehispana de Filipinas” (Prehispanic History of the Philippines). This code has been recognized through the ages by famous authors. However, in 1968, one of the historian named Henry Scott called this a hoax in his book “Prehispanic Source Materials for the Study of Philippine History”. In result, Filipino historians agreed to remove the code of Kalantiaw in future materials in History. Given, there are good reasons why we should not believe this story of the code of Kalantiaw; Lack of historical evidence — namely written or pictorial documents; Lack of evidence for a Kalantiaw legend — since a Datu that has been said had done vicious punishments should have a proof of his doings; Lastly, It’s source — since if Kalantiaw was not a historical figure or a legendary character then many should have known his origin.
