1.My advocacy issue is: Assistive Technology, or AT, is any device or product that helps a person with a disability to perform a task or participate in an activity that would otherwise be difficult. AT’s can include everything from specialized drinking cups to Velcro; from computers to wheelchairs. Funding for the appropriate assistive technology can be challenging and costly for families, institutions, and organizations. Today, only 1 in 10 people in need have access to assistive technology due to high costs and a lack of awareness. 2. My issue is: (check one, unless this has more than one level of government) Local  State  Federal  Other/Unsure  (specify) 3. This matters to me because: I believe that every individual with a disability is capable of reaching their highest potential and living a healthy, productive, independent, and educated life, just like an individual without a disability. I also believe that along with the help of advanced technologies such as wheelchairs, crutches, computers, hearing aids, etc their work will become easier. 4. My research will include: (websites, library, organizations, previous involvement, etc.) The DRC at Southern Connecticut State University, GoFundMe. 5. ACTION PLAN: I want this to result in: One summer, in Turkey I came across a kid collecting water bottle caps and I asked him why he was doing that. He told me that there was an institution that collected water bottle caps and bought young kids wheelchairs. So, I based my plan off of this. I didn’t go off of the same idea of the caps, but I was thinking that I can create a GoFundMe page for the DRC office of Southern Connecticut State University. The DRC provides services including the access to assistive computer technology and alternate formats. On this GoFundMe page, people can
