Forming AISI4140alloysteelhashighductility.Itcanbeformedusingconventionaltechniquesin theannealedcondition.Itrequiresmorepressureorforceforformingbecauseitis tougherthanplaincarbonsteels.
Welding AISI4140alloysteelcanbeweldedusingallconventionaltechniques.However,the mechanicalpropertiesofthissteelwillbeaffectedifitisweldedintheheattreated condition,andpostweldheattreatmentshouldbeperformed.

HotWorking AISI4140alloysteelcanbehotworkedat816to1038°C(1500to1900°F)
ColdWorking AISI4140alloysteelcanbecoldworkedusingconventionalmethodsintheannealed condition.
Annealing AISI4140alloysteelisannealedat872°C(1600°F)followedbyslowlycoolinginthe furnace.
Tempering AISI4140alloysteelcanbetemperedat205to649°C(400to1200°F)dependingupon thedesiredhardnesslevel.Thehardnessofthesteelcanbeincreasedifithasalower temperingtemperature.Forexample,atensilestrengthof225ksicanbeachievedby temperingat316°C(600°F),andtensilestrengthof130ksicanbeachievedby temperingat538°C(1000°F).
Hardening AISI4140alloysteelcanbehardenedbycoldworking,orheatingandquenching.
