All about eve character analysis Margo Channing Margo Channing is a famous theatrical actress at the peak of her career. She wants love and everything else along with her career. As she is aging, she is insecure in her career and knows that double standards that exist in theatre between men and women. As men age they are considered dignified and still handsome, whereas when women just get older and disappear from the limelight, they are replaced with pretty, slim actresses. Margo places a high value on being a married women which fits in with what society expected of women at the time. Men were seen to be more superior than women, they were considered to be the “breadwinners”. By the end of the film, Margo has transformed and reached a point of peace with her decision to marry and leave the theatre. Margo, like Eve, had to drop everything in order to peak and launch her career, but Margo did not deceive to do this. Margo is insecure about her age. This demonstrates the subtle ageism and pressure the theatre world subjected to here. Eve is a mirror reflection of Margo which implies that her sardonic and cruel averments were directed towards her younger self.

Addison Dewit Addison Dewitt is a cynical critic who sees himself as powerful. He has no delusions about people and is the first person to catch on to the reality about Eve. He is a cruel man but has a compassionate side in protecting Karen from losing her husband to Eve. Addison Dewitt takes advantage of Eve and blackmails her. Eve Harrington Eve is a young women who desperately wants to become famous. To do this, she uses Karen and takes advantage of her to take Margo’s place in the theatre. Eve is cunning and cleaver, following her secret plan to stardom. She realizes towards the end of the film that Addison has discovered who she is and what she really is. By the end of the film, she seems to accept the fact that she now belongs to Addison. Eve is an ardent young fan who gradually proves to be a hypocritical, mendacious monster of ambition and greed. Eve knows who Margo is and who her associates are, i.e from “Miss Richards”. Eve’s ability to shift and change relationships and loyalty highlights not only her dangerous duplicity but also the fragility and unreliability of human relationships. Eve is replaceable. Their physical similarity between Eve and Phoebe and the endless repetition of Phoebe’s image forecast a future in which star performance has been overtaken by repeatable and reproducible celeb entertainer. Karen Richards Karen Richards is Margo’s best friend and is loyal. She is tricked by Eve into giving her what she wants and falls for Eve’s plan. She feels helpless as she watches Eve manipulate her husband and tries to lure him to leave Karen. It is thanks to Addison that Eve does not end up with Karen’s wife. Bill Sampson

Bill Sampson is a director in both theatre and Hollywood. First, Bill is besotted by Eve and takes her side against what he sees as Margo’s destructive behaviour and jealousy. Later, he realizes what Eve is all about and wants to have nothing to do with Eve. He firmly rejects Eve’s advances towards him as he is in love with Margo and is turned off by women like Eve. Lloyd Richards Lloyd Richards is the talented playwright who works with both Margo and Bill. They work well together although at times find it frustrating with Margo’s behaviour. His marriage to Karen is a loving one but is nearly destroyed by Eve’s destruction. Birdie Coonan Birdie is a dear friend and assistant of Margo Channing. She is the first person to see right through Eve and does not put up with her tantrums. She likes to speak the truth to her face. Birdie does not believe the illusion that Eve is trying to construct. Birdie is not caught into Eve’s trap. She is real, concrete and sees right through Eve’s illusion....
