Mean Creek: Characters

.

Mean Creek is a coming of age film about a young boy called Sam who forms a plan to get revenge on the school bully, George. His brother, Rocky helps him organise a fake birthday party at the creek, where they intend to throw George overboard and humiliate him. Rocky’s friends, Marty and Clyde join them and Sam invites his friend Millie. As time goes on they begin to realise that maybe George isn’t as bad as what he seems. However, their plan backfires and things go from bad to worse rapidly, eventually resulting in a life-changing horrific outcome. Sam is quiet and reserved. He isn’t as determined for vengeance as his protective older brother is and he becomes more unsure of it throughout the film. His shyness and respect of the older boys causes his to step back when things begin to get out of hand later in the film. Rocky is defensive of his younger brother and wants revenge for George beating him up. He forms a plan with his friends in retaliation of George’s unjust violence against Sam. However, he later realizes that what they are doing is wrong and after Sam begs him to end it, he does. George is seen to be tough and intimidating, the school bully that picks on younger and weaker kids. However, through the film we begin to understand that he is lonely and wants to show off his confidence to become more popular. He isn’t the ruffian he appears to be but actually a good-natured boy who just wants friends.

Marty is Rocky’s impulsive friend. He believe that George deserves retribution for his actions, likely because he feels his stepdad should be punished for his abuse towards him. Even when the others want to call off the plan, he insists they follow through. He maintains this assertiveness long past everyone else, until the end of the film when even he begins to comprehend the appalling reality of what he had done. Clyde is also a friend of Rocky’s. He is quiet and withdrawn. He of all the characters appears to show the most remorse for the events that occured and is the only one to challenge Marty’s view on the situation. He understands how lonely George must feel because he also doesn’t have many friends. Millie is Sam’s friend. Sam brought her on the trip in an effort to get closer to her but as the events unfold she becomes increasingly regretful of coming with Sam. When she is told what the real plan is she is horrified and firmly demands that they call it off. Everyone agrees including Marty although he is very reluctant about this. Then after being provoked by George on the boat he carelessly pushes him over, forming the crisis in the film. Our poster shows the cover image of the characters for the film. Beside each character is an image of them and a written piece about them. The images of the characters are in black and white and are backed on orange to make them look like mugshots. We chose the image of the characters sitting with their backs to each other because we felt it portrayed the film well....
