Description

Macbeth: This picture is a good representation of Macbeth because in the play Act 1, Scene 2 he is mentioned as being physically strong, brave and ambitious as quoted in the play, “For brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name—Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valour’s minion carved out his passage” (I, ii, 15). He is described as a fearless man who is quite strong as he killed Madonwald without any hesitation from his navel to his jawbone which is a difficult thing to do for one person with just a sword

Symbols: Swords and crown The crown makes a good symbol for Macbeth because it symbolizes power and dignity which Macbeth is slowly receiving after hearing the witches’ predictions. In Act 1, Scene 3, it says “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor” (I, iii, 50). This confuses Macbeth and Banquo because in their knowledge the Thane of Cawdor was still present. Not only that when Ross and Angus arrived with the news that Macbeth was now Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth knew now that two f the predictions have come true so would the last one bringing him more power and dignity as mentioned in the act, “ If chance will have me, king, why, but chance may also crown me Without my stir” (I, iii, 155). According to the witches’ predictions and if fate is making him the king then why not. To get the power and dignity ( crown) he is willing to do anything even if he has to kill the current king (Duncan) as it is all a part of the witches’ predictions. The swords represent Macbeth is the battlefield as swords symbolize strength, courage and battles. In Act 1, Scene 2 Ross describes Macbeth as a great fight as quoted in the play “Till that Bellona’s bridegroom, lapped in proof, Confronted him with self-comparisons, Point against point, rebellious arm 'gainst arm, Curbing his lavish spirit; and to conclude, The victory fell on us” (I, ii, 55). Ross describes Macbeth as if he was some sort of war goddess’s husband. Earlier the captain or the soldier described Macbeth as a fierce fighter as well not caring about anything.

Character Development: Loyal: Macbeth was shown to be loyal to the king as he served for the king during many wars and battles without betraying him unlike others such as the previous Thane of Cawdor. In Act 1, Scene 4 when Macbeth meets Duncan in the palace and Duncan congratulates him on being the Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth replies by saying “The service and the loyalty I owe In doing it pays itself. Your highness' part Is to receive our duties, and our duties Are to your throne and state children and servants, Which do but what they should, by doing everything Safe toward your love and honour” ( I, iv, 25-30). Macbeth is reacting to Duncan's appreciation for his assistance in destroying the traitors. Duncan has stated that he will never be able to repay Macbeth for his actions. Macbeth claims that being loyal and fulfilling his duty is its reward, and then goes on to claim that a king is owed the loyalty of his subjects. Bravery: Macbeth is very well known for his on the battlefield and is admired by others around him even king Duncan. In Act 1, Scene 2 when the captain/soldier was talking about Macbeth he says “ The new challenge scared them about as much as sparrows frighten eagles, or rabbits frighten a lion”(1, ii, 35). The captain/soldier describes Macbeth and Banquo as if they are fearless as they are compared with the lion and eagle while the enemy is compared to sparrow and rabbit, two seemingly harmless animals in comparison of lion and eagle.
