When thinking about allusions in media, a film that came to my mind was the Scary Movie series. The Scary Movie series is a collection of films that parody, and make fun of classic and modern horror films. Each film in the series has many allusions to different horror films. I think it is important in comedy, especially parody, to understand the allusions or you will not get many of the jokes. One of the references is a phone call scene made to parody a scene in the movie “I know what you did last summer”. Another reference is to the movie “scream” with a shower scene, and another scene is a parody of the movie “the Ring” with the girl coming through the television screen. Most of these scenes are funny on their own, and you do not need to know the exact allusion to find it silly or funny. I do think that knowing the allusions, and knowing the actual scenes in the real movies does add a lot of humor to the film though. When I first watched the series, I was a lot younger, and had not yet watched the horror films that were referenced. I understood the humor, but I also noticed that a lot fo the jokes went over my head, without me knowing what they were supposed to be a joke of. After re-watching the Scary Movies once I had seen the horror films that were referenced, the films were a lot funnier, and easier to understand. I was also able to notice more references that seemed insignificant before. Once I knew about the films and what happened in each, it was a lot easier to see and get all of the references, even the ones that didn’t seem like humor when I first watched the Scary Movies....
