Description

Wakeup call from LJ Hooker, join hands against Cystic Fibrosis Shane Colquhoun, LJ Hooker Principal Licensee did not expect to commit on partnership with cystic fibrosis long term but changed his perspective while getting involved and were being invited onto the board of cystic fibrosis Queensland as “it says more culturally for us”.

Started with a franchised partnership, Colquhoun created an unspeakable bond with cystic fibrosis Queensland when he slowly getting involved in the fundraising and events. It is some sort of wakeup call when he got to meet a lot of families with cystic fibrosis, which has their emotional story to tell, about the challenges they had. “And the thanks and praise you get from the CF families … is so powerful that you could never not do that event, again…”

There where this emotional moment back when they climb Mount Wayne mountain as a fundraiser that are now stopped to show respect of the Aboriginal. “When you get to the top… we've seen a few tears on top of mountain”. It is a rough and breathless experience to climb such high mountain to insinuate the condition of cystic fibrosis patient facing lung issues. It is rewarding to show support to the cystic fibrosis by fundraising and spreading awareness of the disorder.

Colquhoun highlight his experience yet showed concerned on cystic fibrosis’s future. As COVID-19 has limited the community to gather physically, he is concerned online fundraising may be hugely affected dude to its lack of interaction. “to rely on online raffles and online fundraising… you would gradually lose people over time because it's easy to say no”. The absent of human interaction and feeling is tricky when it comes to fundraise.

However, Colquhoun vowed to keep committing into the cystic fibrosis community so that we can find a cure to this yet no cure disorder. “There is no way you could ever stopped doing what we're doing, because it means so much to the family”.

Key message: Support and donate to Cystic Fibrosis Queensland to show support to the cystic fibrosis community and raise personal awareness on potential carrier on cystic fibrosis gene to early prevention.

Reflection Questions: 1. What did you find most challenging about this task? The most challenging about the task is to highlight the essence of the interview and present it on paper as an interview is loaded with information and emotions. With a word limit of 300, it is difficult to present everything of the twenty minutes long interview. For that, knowing the important content to deliver is vital and most challenging to write a good feature story.

2. What did you do to address these challenges? As it is vital for a journalist to deliver contents that are important to the readers to increase credibility and to create connections between the readers and the content (Bivins 2014). To address this, especially in a feature story, it is important to create emotional connections rather than statistics. As humanly content can deliver stronger messages while creating empathy among the readers (Schmitt, 2013).

3. What images would you suggest for inclusion in your feature story? Why? I suggested an image that was taken in a cystic fibrosis Queensland event. The image was chosen as I want to create a connection between the readers and cystic fibrosis Queensland. Letting the readers to visualise how their fundraising events would be like and possibly attract them to attend their fundraiser or to give donations.
