AMLE Standard 3 Journal Middle Level Philosophy and School Organization

Taylor Adolff EDC 400 - T. Kenworthy October 17th, 2018 One of the most vital things about being a middle level educator is being

able to understand the history and philosophy of middle level education. It is important that teachers understand these philosophies so they can “demonstrate their ability to apply this knowledge and to function successfully within a variety of school organizational settings(AMLE, Standard 3).” It is also important that teachers know and follow these philosophies in order to better the education of their current and future students. By being able to fully understand and apply the knowledge of middle level philosophy, they will be able to “help develop their ability to teach all young adolescents in ways that support healthy development and enhance student learning(AMLE, Standard 3).” All of the teachers in a middle school need to truly believe in these philosophies in order to truly touch the lives of their students and to make sure that they are doing all they can in order to help these children succeed in the classroom. They should be “committed to applying this knowledge of philosophical foundations in their practice to better the education of their students(Powell, S. D.).” The organization of schools needs to be very carefully thought and planned out to help the students thrive in that particular setting. Things such as common planning time, block scheduling, and interdisciplinary teaming can really make a difference for the children in middle school, and these strategies, along with many others, can help to better the education of middle level students. When I attended middle school back in 2011, I never really thought twice about the way that my middle school was organized. Looking back on it now, I

see exactly why it was structured the way that it was, and understand the importance of the structure. Students had teams of teachers in every grade, special education and general education. All of the teams had similar schedules, and were separated into different parts of the building to give them easier access to one another. Similar schedules obviously helped these teachers with common planning time, and allowed these teachers to meet with one another to discuss their weekly plans. In conclusion, I believe that it is extremely important for middle level teachers to study, analyze, and fully understand what the middle level history and philosophy means and how they are able to apply it in the classroom. Without this, teachers will not be able to understand the two areas in which middle school philosophy is grounded in: “our understanding of the unique nature of young adolescents and how we choose to respond to them( Powell, S. D.).” Once a teacher is able to demonstrate and apply their understanding of these philosophies, they will be able to take these philosophies and run with them. The understanding of the philosophies will help the educator grow right along with all of their students.
