For this assignment, you will write an analytical outline in which you analyze the elements of one of the stories listed below.* As with the previous essays, your analysis will be building upon your understanding of the fictional elements you have learned thus far in the course. For this outline, then, you will be looking at the relationship between central idea and character, conflict, point of view, setting, tone/language. Because this outline is practice for the departmental exam, which will also require a general analysis of the major fictional elements of a particular story, I am not–as with past essays–going to provide you with a specific “prompt.” Allow the central idea to be your main focus. USE THE ELEMENT TERMINOLOGY (external conflict, 3rd person limited omniscient, etc.).
