1. What was the ideology that gave rise to pharaonic power? a. The Pharaoh was the not just the king or ruler of the land but was also the “High priest in every Temple” and also the belief that the Pharaohs were the god’s representation on Earth. So, the Pharaoh’s were not just rulers they were also connected to the gods. Which made the Pharaohs actions and words taken in at a different level. For the Pharaoh performed actions for their gods like rituals, also went to war and took great pride in building many temples in honor of the gods. The Pharaonic ideology insisted on the importance of preserving the physical remains of Pharaoh after their death. This then would bind his spirits and from then on, the Pharaoh’s divine power to the Egyptians by the virtue of their position. One of the reasons was the fact that the Pharaoh was the intermediaries between their people and the gods. They had the obligation to sustain the gods through rituals and offerings which then enabled them to maintain the Ma’at, the order the cosmos. Also, the collecting and delegating of resources was also very big at the time and the trading helped their empires to grow. The resources were controlled or overseen by the Pharaoh and they would use the resources to build temples to the gods as well as help the people or kingdom grow and become the power, we all know of the Egyptians today. Also due to religion being so

important through out the kingdom the Pharaoh was their only connection to their gods which was another reason that contributed to the rise of the Pharaonic power. Due to the connection to the gods the Pharaohs had the people looked up their rulers so they could one day join their loved ones in the afterlife. For a time Pharaoh’s said that money and riches were how you got in the after life but when King Tut or King Tutankhamun their stance change and was more like the Christian out look that your actions in this life will effect you in the afterlife. Something simple like going in the afterlife meant a lot to the people so they believed what the Pharaoh said was decree from the gods and then acted on it so they could enter the afterlife where their loved ones were.

2. Explain the relationship between religion and society in ancient Egypt? (blue, green, yellow tab) a. The structure for the ancient Egyptian society starts at the bottom with slaves and servants, then farmers, artisans, merchants, scribes, second from the top is government officials that include nobles and priest and then at the top is the Pharaoh. With religion being so important and sacred to the Egyptians it makes the sense that the Pharaoh is at the top. Just like the society started with the most powerful at the top and went down like a pyramid the gods pyramid structure is the same with Ra the sun god at the top (Egyptian Social Structure, 1942). This is just one example on how religion worked hand in hand with their society. Even though the soldiers are third from the top they are very important due to they were the ones in charge of protecting the kingdom and also the Pharaoh’s who were

gods on earth so even with being third from the tops they were still very important. “Religion played a part in every aspect of the lives of the ancient Egyptians because life on earth was seen as only one part of an eternal journey, and in order to continue that journey after death (J. Mark, 2021)”. The main “principle of Egyptian religion was known as Heka (magic) which was also the name of the god that was they’re in the act of creation. The people imbued this into their daily lives and their lives were dependent on Heka and Ma’at (J. Mark, 2021)”. So, one can say that religion and society had turned in to one thing not two.
