Andres Segovia – The Legacy of a True Masters

“The guitar is the easiest instrument to play and the hardest to play well” -Andres Segovia. Born in Linares, Spain, Segovia is known perhaps as the best guitarist to ever step foot in this planet. He spent most of his career playing modern-romantic genre and like must masters he thought many of the most prolific guitarists nowadays. Moreover, Segovia knew how to fill entire concerts to the point that they were completely sold out. His bewildering career starts at the age of sixteen in which he had his first concert in 1909 in the beautiful city of Grenada, Spain. This was the beginning of something very special for guitar history. He subsequently starts having many concerts during the following years in different cities in Europe that brought a lot of attention to people from all around the world and the young star was claimed as a treasure in classical guitar. Nonetheless, at the time of Segovia’s first steps; the guitar was an instrument that has only been played in taverns. He brings national attention by playing it and demonstrating that it was possible to play classical music with it. Furthermore, following his concert in New York in 1929; he gained worldwide recognition to the point that he went to the Orient to play. Segovia traveled to Manila, Tokyo, Hong Kong following his New York concert. At that time it was difficult to travel to such places on Earth. As many expected, Andres Segovia was going through an amazing episode of his astounding career. He was also beloved by his fans and had the opportunity to meet with very powerful people. Among them, President Jimmy Carter, and Pope John Paul II.

Since his early years, Segovia always dreams of becoming a classical guitar legend. I found astonishing how Segovia built a legacy by playing an instrument that was not yet used for that purpose at the time and he manages to become the most incredible performer in history. A quote that caught my attention from the video was when the Beatles were having an interview and the name of Andres Segovia was brought to the conversation and George Harrison said: “Segovia is the Daddy of us all”. Conversely, Segovia’s answer was pretty spectacular. He said: “I Can’t be the “daddy” they are not my legitimate children because they play the electric guitar”. These exchanges were my favorite part of the entire video because it proved that even the most serious instrument players can have a sense of humor. Moreover, Segovia, the following decades continues to impact classical guitar music largely. Segovia lived 94 long years in which he seldom stops performing live concerts at the highest level. After watching the videos of his legacy, I realized that Segovia extracts every ounce of his talent and his time to achieve all of his accomplishments. He never hesitated to teach or play the instrument he loved. He was also a philanthropist. He constantly gave some of his most precious and historic pieces as donations to different museums to preserve his legacy for eternity. I have many reasons to consider Segovia a pioneer of classical music. One of them is the fact that he is the best guitarist ever and he started when the guitar was not a popular instrument. Also, Segovia thought his entire life, he has many prominent students. Among them is John Williams, which is a pretty decorated guitarist nowadays. In an interview with John Williams, he said that Segovia often “bullied” his students into playing the same style he played.

In conclusion, Segovia’s career can be written into 5 lengthy books or 25 seasons of a TV series and I somehow was able to learn a myriad of facts about him in just over an hour of video. Furthermore, there is a lot to be learned from the Master, but the takeaways I got from the videos are enough to continue my life knowing about his life and his contribution to classical guitar
