The country borders Italy and France but uses French as its official language. The country was founded by its colony back in 1215. Unlike other countries across the world, Monaco state had faced increased change on powers before it gained its independence from Genoa. Even though Genoa founded the country, it lost its control in numerous events to other countries such as Spain and France. A study conducted by Monacodc.org (n.d) indicated that since 1297, Monaco was ruled by the Grimaldi family until after seven centuries. From 1525 to 1641, the Grimaldi family lost control over Monaco to Spain. The Grimaldi family lost control over the Monaco state due to increased family conflicts that made the country's leadership lose focus. Further, they repossessed Monaco back but were dispossessed by French authorities during the French revolutionary regime. The country was now considered a part of France until the Napoleon I war. Stöver (2010) indicated that the Napoleon I fall made Grimaldi's family gain authority over the Monaco state again. Monaco under the protection of Sardinia until 1860, when the Treaty of Turin was signed at Italy's unification. This made Italy give up the territory power to France. During that period, Monaco experienced increased unrest, which led to detach of several principalities such as the Menton and Roquebrune. In 1861, France and Monaco signed the Franco-Monegasque treaty, but it did not restore Monaco's independence. The independence conflicts between 1918 when the Treaty of Versailles was created. The Treaty limited Monaco's protection received from the French given by the government. In 1962, Monaco received a new constitution which established the supreme court of Monaco, guaranteeing citizens their rights. The country's authority continued to push for independence through the help of international authorities. According to Stöver (2010), Monaco joined United Nations in 1993 to become its 183rd member with full voting rights. Later, in 2002, Monaco signed a new Treaty where it becomes an independent nation under the Grimaldi dynasty.
