Shunterika Edwards "Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan (2006) English 122: Composition 1

2 Answers Question 1 The author’s claim in the publication “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan focuses on the fact that people can use the same language in order to feel that their relationship is close and sincere. The author wants to show that the English language helped her to shape the perception of reality around her. As a result, the writer comes to the conclusion that the inefficient use of the language helped her to be more persistent. The main idea of the publication lies in the need to choose the proper target audience for writing books. And it is more important to use heart than mind for this activity. The key message of the publication concentrates on the ability to interpret language as a tool for building relations with the closest people and the readers at the same time. Question 2 The key points in the publication include the combination of pathos and the rejection of ethos that help the reader to concentrate on the main idea. For example, Amy Tan implements pathos in her story when she mentions her mother and their relations. As a result, the reader tries to imagine the situation and becomes emotional due to Tan’s attitude to her parent. In this context, the key point focuses on the need to treat parents with kindness and understanding. Another key point lies in the field of the rejection of ethos. It means that the author tries to show that she is not an expert or a scientist but can show the example of her behavior and thoughts. Question 3 The target audience of this narrative includes people of different ages who need to learn more about their relations with parents. They can understand new values. Moreover, people from 16 to 50 years old who have parents can learn how to show their real love to mothers and fathers. This group of people includes men and women who want to build healthy relations in the family.

3 Another part of the audience includes people who want to use the English language and write stories. In this context, the audience of the text can be wider and include all people who know English and use it for the acquaintance with new literary works that can be helpful for the evaluation of principles in life. Question 4 The author tries to be emotional in her story in order to build a trustworthy contact with the target audience. She makes her choices on the basis of personal expression that demonstrates her passionate attitude to the English language. The presence of traditional values also adds strength to the text. Tan reflects her relations with the mother precisely and accurately. In this example, the reader understands the choice made by the writer in her personal and professional lives. The choices of the writer concentrate on the search for the best words that can serve as an explanation of her transformed attitude to her mother and the interpretation of her modernized perception of the language. Question 5 In my opinion, the author’s claim is strong because she explains the importance of different types of the English language and supports this idea with the cases from her real life. Also, Tan presents her vision that helps to understand that the use of correct tenses or forms of words is not the only way to write clear phrases during the process of creating books and stories. The author educates the audience and highlights that it is not significant to be perfect in English to find the path to the reader’s heart. The statement is strong because it is logically built. Also, the strength of the author’s claim is determined by Tan’s competency in the subject that is discussed....
