Description

Katie Babbitt Critical Approaches Kelly Bezio 27 September 2019 Gore Capitalism and Family Videos Gore Capitalism perpetuates the ideas of violence that affect people throughout the world. It is something that has become so common in our modern day lives that we are nearly desensitized by these instances because we are overly exposed to violence throughout several kinds of media. So, when we see the Fuentes Film Series it shows a tamer side of the world that isn’t always so highly spoken about. These noiseless films tell a story of a well-off Hispanic Family in the early 1900s, the earliest record of its kind and what life was like for them. It is not until we see the beauty in the simplicity of their life that this idea of how gore capitalism has scarred us becomes apparent. When I sat in the audience of a presentation talking about these films and the typical Hispanic experience in terms of how the vast majority lived throughout society, this film series didn’t really hit me at first. It just seemed like poor quality, ordinary, and a family that was enjoying the wonders of everyday life I took for granted. When the stories were being told and I took a step back I tried to put myself in the scenarios I was watching unfurl on the screen. A family getting out of a car walking towards the cameraman. It was obvious by the way the trees moved and their Sunday best swayed about that it was windy. I let myself visualize on this black and white screen what the wind must have sounded like, what the color of her dress must have been, if the person holding the camera was calling out to her to do something memorable for the

camera. In that moment something about Gore Capitalism hit me: You cannot relate to that level of violence it contrives for our minds unless you yourself have gone through it. A series like the Fuentes Family Films really spoke to me because it was something I could understand from my own experiences. Gore Capitalism is something I am simultaneously numb to and aware of but these family films really stand a test of time in a simplistic manner, in a way that relates to viewers, that touches them, that spurns memories of simpler times. Gore Capitalism embellishes and delivers an intensity, there is no mistake to that. It’s this idea of the brighter side of life, this holistic view of the world that shows up not everything is as bad as it so often seems....
