In the film ‘‘Antz’’, the character known as ‘‘Z’’ represents a democratic government since he believes in giving people power to freely choose what they want. Z represents democracy because of his opposing attitude towards authoritarianism, his beliefs of a free-lifestyle and the fact that he delivers he is an independent person who differs from every other ant. Z hates being a part of the colony and despises being a worker as he is enraged at the fact that ants tell him what to do. We find out early on as Z hates authority and wants ants to live freely. ‘‘This whole system makes me feel insignificant’’, Z says this during the opening of the movie as we clearly find out that he hates his job which he is being forced to do and that he doesn’t want ants to push him around and give him orders. We can infer that Z hates authority and that he loves democracy where everyone can be themselves and do whatever they want, which is the message Z was trying to get across in his interview with the psychiatrist. Z is also portrayed as democratic because of his social values and beliefs. An example of Z believing in democracy is when he was heading away from princess Bala and towards ‘‘Insitopia’’. ‘‘Out here you can’t boss me around!’’ Z rejects giving authority to princess Bala as she tried to force him to stop. This shows us Z is an individual who freedom and fairness which clearly represents democracy. On top of that, Z is also shown as an individualistic person who believes every ant should have the opportunity to be whomever they want. This is shown in his belief in Insitopia. ‘‘You can be your own man there’’. This is how the person next to Z at the bar describes Insitopia as he clearly described it as a democratic lifestyle where everyone could be whomever they want, and Z

believed in Insitopia where he believes there is an ideal society where the rights and freedoms of ants are granted, and they are equally respected. In conclusion, Z represents a democratic government as he believes ants should be involved in the system and that they should be remarked as individuals and not just working ants. Secondly, General Mandible represented a very autocratic dictatorship government. Mandible is the one who made all the decisions and judgements based on what he thought was right without the regards of the other ants. Mandible represents dictatorship because of his belief in violence as the only answer, his role in flooding the colony and the fact that he despises the workers in his colony. In the beginning of the movie, Mandible clearly established that he had no sign of peace and that he believed in bloodshed only. ‘‘We should strike first!’’ Mandible says this in his discussion with the Queen as the Queen even told him that they should ask the Termites for peace, but Mandible convinced her otherwise. Only Tyrants start war and instead of pursuing peace, war was in Mandible’s mind all along. This shows dictatorship as he is getting what he wants without the proper consent of the Queen herself as she somewhat doesn’t agree with Mandible’s decision. Mandible also shows dictatorship as he wants to kill all the workers, including the Queen which would make him superior to all. ‘‘We will wash this colony’’. Mandible says this to his advisor as he plans to flood the colony, thus exterminating everyone in it. Mandible plans to create a new colony in which he will rule, this shows dictatorship as he uses bloodshed to rise to power. General Mandible can also be compared to Hitler as Hitler hated Jews and Mandible hated workers. ‘‘Weak, no discipline’’. Mandible says these remarks about the workers as he wants to exterminate them and build a new colony with only soldiers. This represents dictatorship as Hitler (known as a dictator) wanted to kill Jews and Mandible wanted to exterminate workers. In conclusion, Mandible is represented as a dictator because he believes
