Citation Sandwich Embedding research into a paragraph requires three parts: a) Introduce the source or the context of the information b) Quote, paraphrase, or summarize the information (and cite) c) Explain how the information relates to your paper It looks like this:
Analysis Strategies Unsure of what to do with that information you ’ve included in your citation sandwich? Here ’s what you can do with it:
2
Explain it in simpler terms so that your reader can understand
Provide historical or cultural context for it
Connect it to your thesis and/or main idea
Make an argument using the information
Respond to the cited text — do you agree or disagree with it? Why?

Words that Say “Says” for Narrative In-Text Citations Expert tip: Incorporating research should feel like a conversation explained kindly to the reader. In order to put your sources in conversation with one another as well as with your own ideas, consider changing up the verb you use to report the researched information.
What are Document Styles? If you must create a typed document for a college class, most likely your instructor will require you to format it based on a style like MLA or APA. Document styles make documents easier to read and understand by requiring a standard format.

1. APA stands for American Psychological Association. 2. APA style is typically used by disciplines like health, sciences,
3. Because these disciplines have to keep up-to-date on new information and research, APA places an emphasis on timeliness (dates) and organization (headings). 4. Longer documents, especially those intended for publication, will include an abstract. Abstracts tend to be 150-250 words and give your reader an overview of what they can expect to find in your document. 5. APA style requires a cover page. 6. The page that lists the full information for each source is titled
“References.” 14

In-Text Citations
What’s New in APA 7th Edition? The American Psychological Association released its newest style edition in 2019. Here are the big changes between this edition and the last one:
In APA format, a writer can use either Parenthetical or Narrative in-text citations, and each includes the same two or three things: A. Whatever appears first in the References page entry (author’s last name, article title or organization name). B. Year published

Direct quote with marked paragraph numbers
(Kolb, 1986, para. 6)
Kolb (1986) argues, “………” (para. 6).
4. The APA endorses inclusive, bias-free language such as singular they. For example: No one can hold their breath for more than a half-hour. 5. In-text citations for 3+ authors look like: (Lastname et al., 2019). 6. Writers should put one space after a period, not two.
(use whatever’s first in the References entry, usually a title)
7. Publication location (ex: London, New York) is no longer included in most reference entries. 8. Reference entries no longer include “Retrieved from” before listing a URL. 9. DOIs are formatted like URLs. For example: https://doi.org/10.1111/...
