The Sculpture of Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela, the late South African Hero was jailed 27 years as a result of fighting for freedom, who then became a president of South Africa. This sculpture is inspired from Mandela’s jail time. According to Cianfanelli (2016), the sculpture was made to commemorate 50 years since his famous arrest which resulted in incarceration for 27 years, most of which was spend on Robben Island, South Africa. The sculpture is created from 50 steel charcoal coloured columns. The steel charcoal coloured bars serve as a visual qualities too me that make the sculpture my favourite piece of art amongst all of the other Nelson Mandela sculptures I have seen, and the fact the his face was made to fit within those bars ( not his actual face) makes it even more interesting. This is a great work of art.
