Asda Employee Motivation Analysis Asda use many ways to reward and motivate their employees. They have the Asda stars system where employees who are providing high quality customer service and top performance in their role will receive vouchers that they can use in their stores. This is something that is very rewarding and will encourage employees to work hard throughout all their shifts to have the possibility of being able to earn the star points so they have vouchers they can use to purchase items. However, these vouchers are something that can only be used in-store, they cannot be used online. This is something that might not be useful for many employees because some might want to do their shopping online or the store they work at or are near to might not have the items they are looking for. There are ways they could improve this system of their Asda stars. Providing these services online as well as in-store Is something that would be very beneficial for employees and motivate them more as they would have more options to use their points on. Some employees are at their older ages and may struggle getting around stores and traveling to different stores if for example, they wanted a TV and the one that they work at now doesn’t offer an electricals section. The idea of Asda using the employee discount is something that I think is very beneficial to staff and will allow them to save money with shopping at Asda. This staff discount is also available to one person who is nominated by the employee where they can give a discount card to someone in their family and they can all benefit from using the discount, not just the employee. I think this is something that is very motivating for employees where they will serve a solid 12-week commitment to the role and then receive their discount. However, there are problems to this. The employee knows that after being there for 12 weeks that they will then have the card. This doesn’t motivate the employee to work hard to get their card, it only encourages them to stay there for the time needed to receive the card. I think one idea they could use is that the employee needs to be monitored strictly on whether they will receive their card after 12 weeks and must maintain performance to continue using that card. The bonus scheme that Asda offer to their employees is something that is also very motivating and will contribute towards workers working to the best of their abilities. The manager to the employees will have a meeting with each employee individually to discuss their performance where they will consider factors like their customer service, the times they arrive to work, how well and fast they complete tasks and absences. These will contribute to the bonus the employee will receive as a percentage of their wages they have earned throughout the year. This method of giving a bonus to employees is something that is very rewarding and motivating for the employee to work extremely hard throughout the year to ensure they can receive the highest percentage of bonus as possible. Something I think that the Asda could do to improve their system of providing bonuses is creating a sound criteria. They could create different levels of criteria where the employee must meet these different targets and must meet very specific targets to obtain different percentages. This would help and motivate workers even more by creating competition but good competition. If they didn’t quite hit the target they wanted to hit, they can try to improve and work against other employees but in a good manner. Another added benefit for employees is the scheme Asda offer with the car manufacturer Vauxhall. This is where employees can benefit from a discount on brand new cars when they are purchased on finance. This is a feature that is very useful for employees as it can seriously help towards them being able to afford purchasing a car. This motivates employees to work hard and provide the best service they can for customers. However, I do think there are ways they could make some small changes to make this benefit a lot more effective and contribute towards employee motivation. I think Asda

could implement this in a way where they can restrict certain benefits until an employee is meeting a high degree of performance and is also maintaining this to benefit from the discount off Vauxhall cars. Asda offer their standard holiday but they also offer other ways of taking time off and days off. One non-monetary benefit they offer is what Asda call ME days. These days are where employees can use them to take the days off if they are in a bad situation where they cannot make it to work like if a family member has passed away or if employees children are sick and they cannot find anyone to look after them whilst they go to work. These days are a great benefit for the employees of Asda, helping them out in times of need and not being punished for not coming to work or losing out on getting paid. Asda have not long been using their new contracts which they call the ‘flexible contracts’. These contracts are a benefit to the employee whilst also being a benefit to Asda. The new contracts offer the employees of having one pound added to their original wage just to sing up for the new contract whilst new employees that join will be automatically put onto this new contract. This of course is a huge benefit having one pound added to their wage and really boosts their wages up. This is also a benefit to the employer because it means the employees must be more flexible and be able to work on different days and different shift patterns, rather than being on set shifts, making employees more flexible for them, as long as they give them notice. I think a different benefit that Asda could use instead of their Asda stars system is an ARP. An ARP is the annual review of performance where an employee will have a meeting with their manager about how they have been working and discuss their performance to decide if the employee should have a pay rise and if so, how much by. I think this should replace the Stars system because there are lots of different things that go unnoticed for employees and if the store is very busy and their manager is very busy, employees could miss out on the chance to receive these points. Whereas using a specific day where the employee and their manager will sit down to specifically discuss their performance, things the employee has done are more likely to be noticed and they will benefit from that and be rewarded much more than before with the Asda stars system. One way I think Asda could improve their benefits is changing the way that holiday is given and how much people are given. Asda give their holiday in a way where they are given a certain number of hours as holiday instead of days. I think this is something that is quite unfair and employees should be given days of holiday instead of hours. For example, someone who works 10 hours a week and is given 30 hours holiday a year, that means someone only has 6 days’ holiday for the whole year. This makes holiday something that is very valuable to employees. Giving them days of holiday where say they are given 15 days of holiday, it makes the whole situation of booking holiday much less complicated and more beneficial to the employee and fair. 6 days’ holiday in a year is very small. There are other ideas that Asda could use to motivate their employees. Something that is outside the box. Asda could offer their employees to use their scheme of giving them a ticket subsidies. This would benefit employees as they can get money off any tickets that they purchase. This is something that is non-monetary and will be a huge help to the employees. Using the benefits of like this, Will persuade employees to work hard to be able to use these benefits....
