Description

Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to apply for the Erasmus+ programme for the Summer term 2016 at the Friedrich Schiller University. My name is Anastasiia Kasintseva and I am currently a third year theoretical and computational linguistics student at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow. The opportunity to study at your university is of great importance for me. First of all, research skills and academic experience I would gain there are fascinating, since I have been doing research papers on the theory of German language for two years so far. Last year my course paper was connected with the tense marking in German and now I continue it as a member of a research group on syntactic restrictions of the Higher School of Economics. The theme of this year course paper is 'Strategies of complementation with unreal meanings in German' and I am eager to know what prominent linguists in Jena think about these themes and it , probably, would be a chance to ask experts for a piece of their advice for further research. Besides, the great variety of courses you teach would help me to success in different linguistic fields, widen the knowledge I have and make up my own mind about some linguistic problems. There is no doubt that all these opportunities are crucial for a young scholar like me. I would also greatly appreciate your highly interdisciplinary approach and interconnectedness among faculties, as being a theoretical and computational linguist, I am interested in language typology (participated in field work in Mordovia) and second language acquisition, on the one hand, and programming and creating linguistic resources, on the other hand, and your university allows to try myself in all these research fields. I also want to visit conferences and maybe participate in some of them, like my studying group and I did in Russia last year (SCIL, MSPU workshop). Moreover, studying in German would let me improve my language skills and overcome a language barrier. It is really significant for me, as studying languages is my passion, it even became a part of my daily routine. I have been studying English since I was 4 and I must admit that it is impossible to say that you know language perfectly. This summer I was working in the USA for 3 months and every single day I discovered something new about English. Now I study German, Chinese and Greek at the university and I do like it. I decided that I want to be a sufficient user of German since the first German lesson and being involved in German language environment is necessary to reach my goal. I am a sociable and active person, I try to participate in volunteer projects in Russia as much as possible (help children, organizing university events). It will be a real pleasure for me, if I get to know rich German culture, interact and make friends with German and international students and do some volunteer projects. Moreover, HSE is very young, it was founded in 1992, while the University of Jena was founded in 1558, so it would be a new exciting experience for me to feel like a part of the university with a long tradition. It goes without saying that studying at the Friedrich Schiller University is very beneficial for me. So, how would having me as an international student be beneficial for you as well? To begin with, if you accept me, you will get something that you cannot get in Germany – the...
