Description

Discussion 1. Watch "ASL sign names" and read the information that I've posted within the discussion board about ASL sign names. Should hearing individuals create their own signs names? Explain your answer. 2. While watching "Fireflies" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlxPp0vAniY turn on the Closed Captions (CC) option and notice how the signer translates the song lyrics into ASL. Describe what you've observed regarding the lyrics and the ASL interpretation. **Be sure to respond to at least one other student's post. 1. I think that only Deaf people should create someone’s sign name. Just like any other nickname, other people assign you one - you don’t create your own. Therefore, when a Deaf individual gets to know you, they will signify they are comfortable enough with you that they assign you a sign name. 2. I’ve noticed that not every word is translated perfectly. Like in some other languages, there might not be exact words for the english language. I think the basic idea of the song came across even though it wasn’t exactly the same. However, there were some parts of the song that seemed too different to me. For example, in the chorus the singer sings “‘Cause everything is never as it seems” and the ASL translation is WHY? VARIETY. Maybe a person fluent in ASL would understand what this means, but these translation seems a little confusing to me. I think this video shows how difficult it can be to communicate or translate things into different languages. 5 Sentences ASL: MY HOUSE DIRTY English: My house is dirty. ASL: MAN THERE OLD DUMB HE.
