REFLECTION PAPER Relevance of the Kartilya ng Katipunan towards the Realization of the Nation’s Independence The Kartilya ng Katipunan served as the “law” to the Katipuneros which they had to follow. It is believed that the Filipinos used it as a guide until the revolution against the United States. It includes oaths, orders, and teachings that the Katipuneros are binded to live by. The book of Kartilya is a narrative that provides a glimpse or details on how the Katipuneros used to think during the revolution against the Spaniards, it gives emphasis on their main goal to fight for freedom and against oppression. I believe that this book is not just relevant to history but it is also relevant up to this day, it contains a lot of teachings that are very important to know and is still applicable even in our daily lives. One of the teachings or ideology that the Kartilya gives us is the equality of all human beings, may it be men or women, despite all our differences and the things that we have in life, we are all equal, no one is more human than the other. Most of all, the Kartilya of Katipunan opens the eyes of everyone to oppression, it encourages everyone to have the courage and strength to fight for their freedom. It emphasizes that the Filipinos’ battle for freedom is not a battle of one person but a battle of everyone. They did not achieve their goal alone, but did it altogether, it encourages everyone to unite and join a revolution because that is how our ancestors achieved the freedom that we have today. In conclusion, the book of Kartilya ng Katipunan was the key to our Nation’s Independence, it became the guide of the Filipinos even after the battle against the Spaniards. It is believed that we have yet to achieve our true independence because for the Katipuneros, independence includes our political freedom and freedom from exploitation that is presumed to be not yet attained. And so, it is said that the Katipunan Revolution is an unresolved

revolution that we are yet to finish, but I believe that the Kartilya of Katipunan will always remain as the Filipinos’ guide and key to complete independence and freedom up to this present, and until the future.

TEACHINGS OF THE KATIPUNAN “Maitim man o maputi ang kulay ng balat, lahat ng tao’y magkakapantay; mangyayaring ang isa’y hihigitan sa dunong, sa yaman, sa ganda …; ngunit di mahihigitan sa pagkatao.” “All (persons) are equal, regardless of the color of their skin. While one could have more schooling, wealth or beauty than another, all that does not make one more human than anybody else.”

I grew up looking up to the wealthy thinking how much they value or worth. I do admit that I was one of the people who thought that being educated, wealthy, pretty, etc., will make you worth more than those whom the society thinks is not because that was what the world taught me. I remember being insulted and treated differently because I did not pass the people’s beauty standards, but when they needed help for something related to academics and learned that I somewhat excel in studying, they acted so nice just to ask for a favor. This made me realize that we really live in a world where your status or standing in life is so important that people treat you based solely on that. I was grateful that while growing up, I learned that life is more than that, I believe that we are created with the same worth and value and nothing can ever make us worth less. Even as you look at the bigger picture, we all have different standards when it comes to being educated or pretty. For some people they believe that being educated is someone who was able to attend school and graduate with a degree, but for some people, including me, believes that having wisdom, the basic knowledge and awareness of the reality is already being

educated, and at the same time, we all have different standards for beauty because it is subjective, what is pretty for me might not be for you. People can differ with the things they have in life, one may have more and one may have less, but nothing can ever define someone’s worth or value as a person, having more does not make you more human, and having less does not make you worth smaller. Everyone should be treated equally and not be based on their social standing, status, or class in life. Nothing can define your value but I believe that how you treat someone defines what kind of person you are.

“Huwag mong sayangin ang panahon; ang yamang nawala’y mangyayaring magbalik; ngunit panahong nagdaan na’y di na muli pang magdadaan.” “Don't waste time; lost wealth can be retrieved, but time lost is lost forever.”

I missed a lot of opportunities in life because I was too shy and I have no confidence in myself and it is one thing that I regret a lot. I know that there’s no way I can have those opportunities again and I later realized that our life is too short to be afraid of trying new things. During this school year, I wasted a lot of time procrastinating, rescheduling my tasks to do, etc. Instead of studying during my free time and finishing my tasks earlier I always end up sleeping or doing nothing, and it is also I who was greatly affected because of this but there’s nothing else I can do but not to repeat it again. As we grow older, what we have ahead of us is slowly being limited, we have limited time, the things we can do are limited to what we are capable of and such. I believe that our life is just something that we borrowed from God (or to whoever you believe in), which is also why our life is too short and our time should be valued. “Time is Gold”, I wished I understood the meaning of this quote earlier in life. Life is

too short to waste time, we can still earn back what we lost through time but we can never bring back time no matter what we do....
