Describe and analyse how you can develop your employability skills whilst studying for your degree at this University. Introduction: the essay will be outlining and explaining how the different opportunities and options available at the university can help enhance the attributes required to become more career operable. What are employability skills? To be skilled is to be able to perform a learned activity well and at will (Cottrell, 2013). Employability is "A set of achievements, understandings and personal attributes that make individuals more likely to gain employment and to be successful in their chosen occupations". Peter Knight & Mantz Yorke (HEFCE/DfES ESECT group) From http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/sk/skillsintro.htm accessed 26/10/15 There are so many definitions as to what employability skills are. In short they are the required attributes that employers are looking for in their candidates. Main body: degree plus, this is a department linked to the university that deals with the types of work that are connected to the course being studied. Why this is good? It offers placement opportunities that can give students the work experience they need to make them stand out. Sometimes this can lead to full employments after the student’s final year. They offer a variety of services that include graduate opportunities (first job), placements 6-12 months and volunteering. Placements- these are done through degree plus and the staff there will help you to find the right placement. How the placements are competitive? Would work experience be better? ‘Work experience provides many benefits, giving you skills and experience that will allow you stand out to potential employers as well as helping you choose the right sector to work in’ (http://www.theiet.org/students/work-careers/work-experience/benefits.cfm) accessed 27/10/15. The growth hub- located at Oxstalls campus in Gloucester. This is the Ariel in building a relationship between the university students and employers. The growth hub works with the university and the students union to ensure that students venture into entrepreneurship (http://www.thegrowthhub.biz/student-enterprise/) accessed 26/10/15. This is a good skill because it shows employers that you enjoy the subject. It is very good as it allows you to meet employers and gain contacts. International experience- the majority of students will get to go abroad, whether that be on a normal trip or taken as part of a module. Either way it will look great on a CV because it demonstrates that you have been expose to the global business environment. ‘Employers are very aware that people who have studied abroad gain valuable life skills and, of course, recognised qualifications and experience.’ (http://www.glos.ac.uk/study/international/pages/study-abroad.aspx) accessed 28/10/15. Linked in- this is similar to Facebook but is for professionals. It’s a social networking site for businesses. BM4090- the module itself and how this can enhance the attributes of the student. This module is designed to make the student more career ready as it build a personal and professional portfolio about the student.
