Brittany Pace Rhea DeRose-Weiss LA 108 OL6: Art Review May 14, 2018 Review of Academy of Art University 2018 Graduation Ceremony It was a matter of great fortune that I got the chance to visit the Academy of Art University 2018 Graduation Ceremony. I had been deeply impressed by the programs that were published in the brochure. Although, I was not sure if the ceremony would be successful. In the end I was glad that I was able to see the ceremony because it showcased a wide variety of contemporary fashion trends. I was highly pleased with the work displayed in the fashion show. Most of the designers are budding artists and their work reflected their new ideas. I was particularly fascinated by Brianna Toomer, who succeeded to show the important aspect of gender roles through her designs. In fact, this was the most important aspect of the entire show. The audience was left spellbound after the wonderful display of art at the ceremony. This essay will focus on the different works on display at the ceremony and I will also elaborate on Toomer’s stellar collection. The B.F.A. and M.F.A. students at the Academy of Art University showed their work to industry professionals. Students collaborated with professionals to create new designs in fashion design, textile design, 3D pattern, costume design and fashion merchandising. After the show, honorary doctorate degrees were awarded to Alexander Fury, Andre Walker and Lutz Huelle. An interaction was also organized between these three stalwarts and the students of the University.

The most surprising part about the fashion show was the amazing work students put up. It was amazing to see young students perform so well and create designs worthy of fashion labels. The students showcased new techniques in their work and highlighted different types of attire. There were three distinct sections, showcasing the attires of men, women and children. It was a great experience to see so many new fashion trends and learn about style. The models carried their outfits beautifully and walked the ramp with confidence (“2018 Graduation Fashion Show”). The music, lighting and background were extremely perfect. Overall, the show was a huge success because it was conducted in a professional manner, although I felt that the duration could have been shorter. The most impressive designer of the show was, undoubtedly, Brianna Toomer. Her collection was deeply influenced by her own perception of women and she paid a tribute to all the women who had participated in World War II. Her collection, “Nobody’s Wife”, balanced masculinity and femininity simultaneously and showcased clothes for female tomboys. I particularly loved the juxtaposition of male and female silhouettes to bring a creative twist to her designs. With seam lines with zippers and exposed side seams with multilayer bias bindings (“2018 Graduation Fashion Show and Awards Ceremony”). She proudly showcased women as bold and confident beings, who could wear masculine clothes and yet look beautiful. Toomer’s design used colors like blue, green and black to reinforce the juxtaposition of masculinity and femininity. These clothes looked beautiful. Her moderate use of colors enhances fashion to a great degree (Kurt et.al). I was really impressed by the fact that she had perceived femininity in a different manner. Toomer’s collection reflected that she treated men and women equally. Her main aim was to design clothes for those women who were as tough as men and could carry off similar attires. I

thought that it was really brave of Toomer to attempt this sort of a design style. Most designers shied away from displaying women as tough and athletic. They preferred to show women as epitomes of beauty and grace. Toomer’s collection took a completely different approach and showed women as strong creatures, who could carry off masculine clothes confidently. Even though I thought Toomer was the best performer of the evening, I must admit that the other designers did really well too. Marisa Chentakul, Sam Shan and Minghan Xue also displayed some stellar designs. Due to the different ethnic backgrounds of these students, they could depict their own cultures beautifully and present a variety of designs to the audience. Chentakul, Shan and Xue showcased Malaysian, Burmese and Chinese designs at the show. I gained a deeper understanding of these cultures through their designs and I loved the way they paid tributes to their background.

The fashion show lived up to my expectations. Even though I felt that perhaps the show could have been of shorter duration, I enjoyed every minute of it. It was really amazing to see young designers come up with such great work. I would recommend everybody to watch this show and learn about the fashion industry. I learnt that fashion has many forms and patterns. It is important to understand these different definitions of fashion and then form a personalized style (Johnson et al.). Overall, I loved the show. I really did not think there were any major negative points and it was a fairly well-conducted ceremony. It was a pleasure to listen to fashion stalwarts like Fury, Walker and Huelle. I really enjoyed Toomer’s work and also appreciated the different representations of culture at the show. It was a great experience and I would love to see a fashion show again soon.
