The way this organization partnered up with correctional facilities is the most exciting part to learn about. On how the men and women who participate in this program while serving their time can gain skills to receive a potential job offer once they are released. According to the Patriot PAWS website, the organization recently hired two released inmates to continue training services dogs at one of their locations. And these people are a crucial point in a dog’s training. This stage is important for the dogs' training to work on obedience. Another is to improve on any weaknesses the animal may have. A personal experience I encountered was one of the younger puppies having biting and barking issues. After doing the weekly report with the head trainers, the dog was going to be sent to prison to break out of those habits. Inmate trainers would work with a dog for 18 months to about two years until the animal is ready to work for a veteran. A bigger trust bond is developed between the inmate and dog since the person has much more time on their hands. In the end, the trainer and trainee both gain something out of it. The certified service dog is matched with their forever home. And the people in correctional facilities are proud knowing they helped someone highly in need of a working dog....
