IS 340 MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS CHAPTER 12 LAB

Lab 12 Management Decision Problems (40 Points) (Individual Assignment) Caterpillar is the world’s leading maker of earth-moving machinery and supplier of agricultural equipment. The software for its Dealer Business System (DBS), which it licenses to its dealers to help them run their businesses, is becoming outdated. Senior management wants its dealers to use a hosted version of the software supported by Accenture consultants so Caterpillar can concentrate on its core business. The system had become a de facto standard for doing business with the company. The majority of the 50 Cat dealers in North America use some version of DBS, as do about half of the 200 or so Cat dealers in the rest of the world.

Answer the following questions as completely as you can. There should be at least 5 corporate stakeholders and 2 or more dealer stakeholders that need to be considered. 1. Before Caterpillar turns the project over to Accenture, what factors and issues should it consider? Introducing and adopting new technology requires some prior implementation to be done. How the company is going to introduce new technology is a major question. It should consider the cost of Outsourcing the DBS systems to other consultant the transfer of responsibility to concerned will take time to evaluate and find positive and negative off it. The company has to supervise few days / months to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of a new company chosen. Choosing new development plan will require Executives to understand and develop plans for system migration. Caterpillar are responsible for reduction beneficial longer run. The biggest advantage would be staying up to date with industry standards. This, along with providing more efficient business processes, would also keep the company image strong in the industry. Now, this can also be a very big reason for underperformance if all users are not supported / trained properly for the new interface. It is difficult for personally and existing users for the new technology followers.

2. What questions should it ask? The questions to the dealers from my side would be entirely based on their experience with the old systems: 

Were there any features that made work easy?

What were the limitations of the previous systems?

What did you like about the previous systems?

How much impact did the system have on you and your performance?

Were you comfortable with the previous systems?

How will it help to minimize the possible risks?

How much time it will to take to adapt new technology?

What project management techniques will you follow?

How will you use some architectures in the new system?

3. What questions should its dealers ask? First phase should be of asking the questions mentioned above and getting feedback from them. Then all of these feedbacks should be linked to features on the new system.      

Are there any possible Alternatives that are available to choose from? How much time will be taken to adopt new technology? How different is it of others are better matching our company? What prerequisites we should considered prior switching the system? how to easily perform the same on the new one? how it is being included in the new Accenture system? This is a very important phase as this will increase the acceptability of the new system across users and company won’t face many issues in performance. After this counselling phase, then test it out and see how people are reacting to it? For example, Let’s say Minnesota has most users, they can try it out to them first. Then after feedback they can slowly try it out to the rest of the America as well.
