Residential Building Assignment 2 – AS1684 Timber framing code Overview of Assignment Your project home is to be constructed using timber framing in a non-cyclonic wind classification zone – category N2. You are required to design the timber framing members in accordance with the AS1684 Residential Timber-Framed Construction. AS1684 has four parts; these include: Part 1 Design criteria; Part 2 Non-cyclonic areas; Part 3 Cyclonic areas; and Part 4 Simplified - non-cyclonic areas. This standard is the only framing standard adopted by the NCC/BCA as a deemed-to-satisfy solution for structural timber framework. However, there are other standards for structural steel framework and brickwork together with commercially based timber engineered solutions, such as the Hyspan tables we will also use.

Task There are three sections for this assignment. Each section has some sub-questions. To answer these questions, you are required to utilise the appropriate AS1684 and Hyspan tables, floor plans and elevations, located on vUWS under Assessment 2.

SECTION 1 - Wall and roof framing (19 marks) 

Using the tables from AS1684, calculate the minimum size of the nominated timber members using Section A-A of your project home. NB: Drawings indicate a tiled, trussed roof @ 22½0 pitch. Assume studs at 450mm centres. Use only SEASONED timber as nominated and DO NOT use alternative sections as noted in Table A1.

Q1. (4 Marks; this includes the sketch and calculation) Truss span

Q2. (1 Mark; this includes parameters) F8

Q3. (1 Mark; this includes parameters) F17

Common wall studs

Bottom Plate

(notched)

(not trenched)

Q4. (1 Mark; this includes parameters) MGP12 Top Plate

Q5. (1 Mark; this includes parameters) MGP12

(not trenched)

Jamb studs to Laundry door with assumed opening of 910mm

Q6. (1 Mark; this includes parameters) MGP10

Q7. (1 Mark; this includes parameters)

Lintel to Dining Room window with assumed opening of 2110mm

Order length for Q6.

Assume that we replace the trussed roof with a traditionally constructed ‘coupled roof’. For the span across the Bedroom 1 to Patio brick pier support (and assuming that the roof is configured as detailed in the section below) determine the minimum size of each of the roof members nominated, given that you must use SEASONED timber stated. (NB: use continuous span rafters at 450mm centres and check for overhang capacity before selecting).

Q8. (4 marks; this includes the sketch and calculations) Rafter span (mm) = Actual overhang (mm) =

Q9. (2 marks). Rafter MGP12

Q10. (1 Mark) hySPAN Underpurlin (continuous span @ 2.4m)

Nominated timber size = Nominated overhang size =

Q11. (1 Mark) F5 Collar tie

Q12. (1 Mark) hySPAN + Continuous span ceiling joist (across Bed 1) with support to hanging beam @ max 2490mm-2525mm span)

SECTION 2 – Bracing (10 marks) Q13.

Calculate the height of building (2 Mark)

Q14.

Calculate the number of bracing units required for your house, for each wind direction; i.e. the wind direction towards Elevation 3 and Elevation 4 (4 Marks)

Q15.

Based on the number of bracing units determined for your house in Q14, state the combination of Type A and Type B bracing units that you will use for the section of walls in each of the wind directions i.e. the wind direction towards Elevation 3 and Elevation 4 (4 Marks)

SECTION 3 - Specific Fixings (Tie Downs) (6 marks) For this question ONLY, assume that the roof is a metal sheeted coupled roof. Nominate the specific fixings requirements from Table 9.6 for: Note: Please indicate the parameters Q16.

Bottom plate to slab with spacing of 1800mm.

Q17.

Studs to top and bottom plates.

Q18.

Continuous rafter to top plate with a rafter spacing of 600mm (NB: no ridge tie-down).

Submission and Format 

Fill in the spaces (boxes) provided in SECTION 1 (i.e. Q1 to Q12) either handwritten or typewritten

Show your calculations/workings and parameters for SECTION 1 (i.e. Q1 to Q12) on another separate page/sheet either handwritten or typewritten

Provide your responses for SECTION 2 and 3 (i.e. Q13 to Q18) on a separate page/sheet either handwritten or typewritten (12-point font size)

Submit your answers for SECTION 1, SECTION 2, SECTION 3 and the Calculations/Workings for SECTION 1 as one document (PDF) through vUWS by WEEK 12 (Friday, 21st May 2021 by midnight 11:59pm)

Please attach a WSU Assignment cover sheet on the front page of your assignment which is available in "Assessment 2" folder
