Description

ASSIGNMENT 2 (GROUP) (40%) For this assignment, you are required to write a critical analysis essay. Your analysis should be 15 - 17 pages long; typed (double-spaced, Arial font 11/Times New Roman font 12). I expect your analysis to be free of grammatical and spelling errors, and otherwise well edited.

A critical analysis essay asks the writer to make an argument about a particular book, topic, issue, essay, movie, etc. The goal is twofold: one, identify and explain the argument that the author/topic/director is making, and two, provide your own argument about that argument. One of the key directions of these assignments is often to avoid/minimize writing a summary – you are not writing a book report, but evaluating the argument.

Work hard on making your essay very readable to a general audience – it should flow well and be written cohesively. You should have an introduction, discussion of the text, and clear conclusion (although these don’t have to be broken into explicit sections).

DO NOT COPY and PASTE FROM THE INTERNET. PLAGIARISM WILL NEVER BE TOLERATED AND COULD RESULT IN YOU GETTING A ‘0’.

You will also have to present your critical analysis in PPT (power point) – record yourself, compile as a group and submit together with your essay. Your presentation would basically be the same as your critical analysis essay but you would be presenting the main discussions. Your slides should include:  Background of your topic  Reason behind your choice  Details of discussion and arguments  Conclusion

You need to choose and analyse 1 out of these 4 topics. You may compare and contrast your topic and critically analyse it with other relevant issues, topics, books, movies, research, etc. Do enough background search.

Your choices are: 1. Take a look at how women are portrayed in a particular medium today. For example; cinema. Has sexism that polluted 50’s Hollywood been wholly removed from movies? Like this, you may choose any medium like sports, education, business and etc. 2. Examine the influence of a popular TV series on youth. 3. World War II. Some say that it was a necessary tragedy that shaped the modern world. Present and analyse this controversial opinion. 4. Take a dystopian novel like The Handmaid's Tale or Brave New World and compare it to society today.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding on a topic: •

Make sure the topic lends itself easily to critical analysis. Famous

literature and controversial articles would be excellent choices. •

Find a topic which is widely discussed. Different opinions can help you

think outside the box and create a strong argument. •

Try to keep it narrow/focused. It is easy to get lost in the pool of

information and details. (Find a focus and address limitations). Some topics can be complicated, and it may take books to explore them fully.
